RAID and backups

Postby davewhite » Tue Feb 23, 2016 7:23 pm

What is the story with Disk Wizard, I can't seem to download it. The reason I setup Amahi is to be able to back up my files to some sort of RAID. I have 2 Tb hardrives on my old Dell Inspiron 560 but I see only one drive. I have no idea even where to begin with setting up automatic backups. Sorry for the dumb questions but I'm new to this environment. I have only used removal hard drives in the past.

disk-wizard App is in the Amahi store. You should see it in your Available Apps tab of the HDA dashboard.

I sure do, but there doesn't appear to be a link anywhere to download the app. It's like a riddle...

When you click on the app, doesn't it expand to reveal text and the Install option?

Amahi does not have any RAID apps. RAID is somewhat complicated and not as practical for home use in my opinion. Not sure why many think it's the way to go for backups. Too many things can break or go wrong with RAID if you are not careful and experienced.

I would suggest you consider Greyhole. I use it and works great for keeping extra copies of files. I have 3 drives with files on each. Not much of a chance that all 3 drives will fail at once.

You might benefit from the Backups wiki guidance. This Amahi Wiki is our primary source of tutorials and information that most users need.

Umm...okay, not the answer I was expecting. Not even RAID 1, for disk mirroring? Not much good if I can't back up my data, that was the whole point of building my file server buddy.

No automatic RAID. It is a manual setup that you would need to do.

Not many people use RAID anymore for home servers in my experience. The are many backup options to include using Greyhole which provides file redundancy.

Amahi is a server addon so anything you can do with Fedora would work.

If you are set on using RAID and don't want to do the manual work, you might consider going with OpenMediaVault.
