A question regarding the TIme Machine WIki

Postby galoisienne2 » Sun Jan 19, 2014 7:44 am

One thing the Amahi Wiki says is the following: "The way Apple's Time Machine software works requires more disk space than the size of the backup available. It is usually best to put a volume size limit in place before the first backup is created."

Do I really have to do this now given my setup, or, can I just launch the back up process. I'm not exactly sure what it means when it says that Apple's time machine will grow the backup size to use all available disk space ???

In terms of context, I've got Amahi time machine installed and I can see the volume in my finder window and in my Apple time machine preferences. There's probably 500 Gb left on my Apple time machine and nowhere near that actually used currently on my server volumes (total capacity of my server volumes is only 400 Gb, but again, nowhere near that used.). So not sure what I'd need to limit. Looks like I have more than enough space on the time machine hardware to archive the server volumes.

Thanks

I gave it a try. Here's the error message. I don't get it. I don';t have much on server volume and approx 400Gb remaining on my apple time machine/capsule.

Here is the error the time machine gave me about not being able to complete the back up:

This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 131.20 GB but only 22.31 GB are available.

Time Machine needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files.

I'm having the same issue. The volume that my Time Machine folder is sitting in has plenty of room, my message 'The backup requires 130.25 GB but only 40.12 GB are available.

I updated the AppleVolumes.default configuration file with the following

Code: Select all

# # AppleVolumes.default automatically generated by Amahi # :DEFAULT: options:upriv,usedots /var/hda/files/amahi-time-machine "Time Machine" allow:@users allowed_hosts:192. 168.1.0/24,10.8.0.0/16 rwlist:@users options:tm volsizelimit:512000
updated the volsizelimit:512000, which if I remember correctly should be around 5 GB, restarted netatalk service, but still get the same error message.
