hmm do you need it at boot or at login time?
if it should start at boot time, rc.local is the way to go but you must make sure rc.local is ran in your starting runlevel
I'm not sure how fwbackups works w.r.t. scheduling, otherwise you can put it in a cronjob. I've read that it needs a GUI tho (boo!) so that may not be an option.
in that case rsync is (from what I've heard) a viable alternative.

I see that we are on page two of this thread, but I am very interested in this subject, and if you don't mind I would like to continue it a bit.

I'm wondering if there is a consensus here:
rsync with cron
dd with cron
fwbackup
or?
I'm looking to get another HDD the same size as my OS HDD and be able to backup byte for byte on a regular basis. I don't raid, so I'm looking for a software solution that would run on a schedule and be fairly painless to use.

I think fwbackups is a great solution to this much needed problem. I've installed it and am having trouble getting to to run at login. I've tried adding it in the System > Personal > sessions > startup programs menu, as well ass adding it to rc.local, but when I login as root, it won't autostart. I really need it to start automatically after boot/login. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this?
You probably created this wiki entry http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Fwbackups, but if it wasn't you then here it is!
