RESOLVED: Update to Ubuntu 14.04

Postby jfz » Sun Apr 20, 2014 10:23 am

Hi,
Actually, I'm using Amahi on Ubuntu 12.04
As I'm planning to update to Ubuntu 14.04. I'm wondering, if amahi support for this new LTS Release is planned or if I can simply update my 120.04 to 14.04 and amahi keep still working.

We are considering an update to the new Ubuntu 14.04 LTS version, however I anticipate it will require a new install. Amahi 7 is so much different than Amahi 6, that an upgrade to the OS will most likely break Amahi.

There has been some work with it, but still early in development stages and likely months away from any sort of useable release. The single developer of Ubuntu for Amahi is not currently available and unsure when he will have time to pursue integration with the new Ubuntu version.

If you are considering updating to 14.04 now with Amahi, I would discourage it as that likely will break Amahi 6. Upgrading is almost guaranteed to incapacitate your HDA.

While we are not for sure how or if there will be an upgrade path, we will keep the community posted. As for now, Amahi 7 on Fedora 19 is the only officially supported release.

Just for your information, Amahi 6 on Ubuntu is in maintenance mode, so you won't see any updates for Amahi or the apps on 12.04.

Hello Bigfoot65

Thank you very much for the reply. In this case, I will wait and stay for a while on 12.04
As Fedora is not intended for longtime support, this is unfortunally no alternative for me, as I want to set up my home server for an uptime of several years :-(

I will stay tuned and hopefully, an actual release for a LTS linux distribution will be released in future.

Understand. I just wanted to ensure you knew not to upgrade to the latest Ubuntu. It might work, but most likely it would cause breakage in Amahi.

Wished Fedora had LTS versions as it seems to work better than Ubuntu for me. Oh well, I just go with the flow LOL

Nothing new regarding this, I suppose?

No. Development has halted as we no longer have an Ubuntu developer.

As I mentioned previously, Ubuntu is in maintenance mode.

If you want to be with the latest, recommend Amahi 7 on Fedora 19. We have added a lot of nice features, to include a disk wizard and Greyhole UI for the dashboard.

There are more reasons to move to Amahi 7, than not in my opinion. I was on Ubuntu at one time as well and glad I moved to Amahi 7 on Fedora 19. Things are leaner, quicker, and more features are continuously being added.

Umm ... yeah ... oops! An update to Ubuntu LTS was offered to me on my server, and I assumed it would have critical security fixes so went through the process!

My server is still working, serving DHCP & DNS, and my shares are still working. The database is running, as is amahi-sync and amahi-anywhere.

The web server isn't working, though, and neither is openvpn, and my Control Panel page at https://www.amahi.org/users has a status warning. It's no longer a functional Amahi server, although it is still a functional Linux server.

Looks like I need to hunt down some Amahi config files for Apache, so I can manually bring the hda homepage and all the required services up. Are these stored anywhere in the installation, or will I need to do a new install on a spare machine to copy & edit them over to my main server?

What kind of updates? Did you update to the latest 12.04.x LTS or 14.04?

If it's 12.04.x and things broke, then we may have an issue. Please provide some details as to what you did specifically and what was updated.

Nope, it was to 14.04.1. I had previously said "no" to an upgrade to 14.04 LTS, but with the recent public security issues, I presumed the next upgrade would default to not breaking anything, so when the offer to 14.04.1 was offered, I thought "why not?".

Apache is upgraded to v2.4 in the current LTS of Ubuntu, and some of the changes cause the Amahi web facilities to break:
1. the apache user is disabled by default, so Apache2 won't start using the standard commands
2. the standard Amahi way of creating virtual hosts looks like it's being ignored, as the conf files need to be in subfolders under /etc/apache2 rather than in /etc/httpd.

When I get a couple of hours, I'll have a play with those and then look to see what else is different / broken / unexpected in 14.04.1 LTS

Figured it would break Amahi as why we do not support the upgrade. We cannot provide any support it at this time. So please understand if you have any further issues, you are on your own.

There are many pieces to Amahi and those that broke will likely cause more issues down the road. I would recommend you either go back to 12.04.x or upgrade to Amahi 7.

If you are looking for a science project, then that's what it will become. However, I can imagine you will spend many hours trying to fix it only to find out there's a lot more issues than you realized. The things you mentioned are not easily changeable in the Amahi platform.

This upgrade also may prohibit you from installing any apps from the Amahi App store as well. Again, it's not Amahi compatible so you may be setting yourself up for failure.

It's your server and time, so I wish you well.
