SOLVED: How to tell Ubuntu that I removed a hard drive?

Postby badunc » Sun Jul 07, 2013 1:21 pm

A non-pooled hard drive failed on me (Ubuntu 12.04) last week. Thankfully, the data that I lost was replaceable so it's not that big a deal. The OS is on the healthy drive so I'm just using the single remaining drive to store everything for now. However, when I boot up I am informed that the drive isn't present and asked if I want to skip mounting it or try again. I tell it to skip and that's fine, but how do I inform Ubuntu that the drive is gone forever? This seems like it should be an easy question to Google but so far I've not been able to find the answer!

Edit your /etc/fstab file by removing the reference to the drive and reboot. Backup the fstab before you edit just in case you mess it up.
