After Ubuntu 12.04 plus Amahi install, can I install gui?

Postby itpro007ca » Sat Nov 10, 2012 1:14 pm

Since the wiki instructions for Ubuntu 12.04 Server says no other software can be added,BEFORE Amahi,I'm wondering if it's ok to install a gui after(purists -button it!)?

I also want and need to use that amd64x2 machine as a workstation to learn LAMP and Programming and try out some 3D games I used to play before.

Thanks,
Richard

If you want to install a GUI, why use Ubuntu Server. Might as well use Ubuntu Desktop.

Because I wanted to try something different!I've used many different Linuxes, including Ubuntu Desktop.

In any event,I have Ubuntu Server up and running.I did a lot of setup,ie: Amahi, from the command line(hey,I go back to the DOS days,so 'been there...',but using Linux and been trained as a Network Administrator under Windows I prefer it and using the terminal,or dropping out of the gui if I have to!),then I decided to add 'gnome-core.'

So...
Here's the story so far:

Ubuntu Server 12.04 installed
Amahi downloaded.Code good.Started OK.
HDA Profile is running.

in my profile on the website,it lists my HDA as running, but OpenVPN Tester is a problem.

*Should I have given the HDA a different Class C IP address to the Server. In this case,I gave them both '192.168.2.10.'When it starts up for the first time wouldn't it have changed the Server's IP address(which I didn't want)?

HDA Connect on my Windows PC here has not finished the connection for some reason.
(not my Firewall, because I tried shutting it off and no difference.)

On my Notebook downstairs(and my XP PC here in the upstairs computer room),under Networks(Win7),all show up,except 'Blackbox' shows up as 'HDA.'To connect to it,via tightvnc,I had to use my Ubuntu Server User credentials.

What did I do wrong,or have I missed?

I'm hoping to get this right yet!

Any help appreciated.

The IP address you entered in the HDA profile on amahi.org should be your desired IP for the HDA. Then once Amahi is installed, it will assign that IP to the HDA.

If you followed the instructions at http://docs.amahi.org, all should be fine.

Ok.It looks like I made a mistake in that I shouldn't have given the HDA the same IP address as the Server.

Can I somehow delete my Amahi profile(or correct it) and remove Amahi from the Ubuntu Server and start again?

The HDA and the Amahi server are one in the same. If you are running a separate server, then yes they need different IP addresses. Unfortunately, Amahi is not uninstallable. You must start from scratch, deleting the profile and reloading the OS and Amahi.
