Ok.
the file appears free of any strange "M" characters, so I assume is the amended version.
I tried "chown root:root /etc/init.d/mount_shares_locally"
service mount_shares_locally start still fails.
I still have the "file not found" issue.
This is becoming annoying.

There may have been other special characters which you did not see. One thing you can do in the future to ensure there are no hidden Windows characters is use a utility called dos2unix.
It might have to be installed on the HDA, but once there it will convert text files and strip all those crazy characters that cause us so many problems.
