Samba File transfer speeds

Postby apastor » Sun Jul 08, 2012 9:40 pm

Has anyone tried copying files from ubuntu amahi server to their PC

I noticed a big speed increase. In fedora I was getting transfer speeds 75MB-80MB/sec copying files from server to my PC.

Now I am getting 110MB/sec. All using the same hardware, just different OS. I am very pleased with this.

Yes, my speed rate seems to be better as well. Not sure why though.

What version of Samba are we running in UbuntuMahi?
What version of Samba are we running in FedorAmahi?

Curious if the version are different AND cauding faster speeds.
It could also be the better drivers in the later version Ubuntu OS, versus un-updated F14.

I dont know what version of samba i was using in Fedora. Im guessing the latest version that was able from standard yum updates.
As for ubuntu im guessing it will be the current update from apt-get install.
(im at work now so I cannot check)

My guess from the speed increase would be from driver update and even newer version of samba.

I thought this was cool. I wanted to share and see if anyone else noticed any speed increase.

I find I can't break the 8 MB/s with my Windows 7 setup regardless of Fedora or Ubuntu. All other devices on the network are > 90 MB/s. It is odd, however, that I can stream my 20 MB/s content on the Windows 7 system from the server no problem. It's all very frustrating...

So when you copy a file from ubuntu/Samba to your Win& PC, it will only go 8MB/sec
But if you stream (video?) you are getting 20MB/sec?

If your streaming are you sure its 20MB/sec?

Also I seen some reghacks out there that fixed win7 and samba transfer speed issues. I never had to use them before.

I wonder if its a driver issue on your Win7 PC.

Are you using the MS drivers or driver from manufacture?

To or from Ubuntu over Samba maxes at 8MB/s on normal file transfers...average is closer to the 4-6MB/s range.

I have a Boxee Box on my network that can stream 90MB/s bitrate content from the server over Samba but only 7MB/s bitrate content from the Win 7 machine comfortably.

I can stream 15-20MB/s bitrate 1080p video from the server to the Win 7 machine with minimal hiccups.

I am using the on board Intel NIC and the drivers that came with the motherboard. Intel i5 2500 quad with 8GB RAM on a home built system. The Win 7 connects to the rest of the network wired over a 500Mbps powerline adapter.

I followed the direction of the below linked article and managed to increase average transfer from 3 to 5.

Are all other devices connected to your network with normall cat5e cable, and just your Win7 PC using the powerline adapter?

If so, have you tried plugging into your network directly and not use the powerline adapter?

I've always noticed a better file transfer experience with using TeraCopy in Windows

Thank you for the ideas/suggestions. I'll take a look at my system and try them out.
