Amyone using Virtualization?

Postby ciscoh » Wed Apr 18, 2012 4:50 pm

Since i was one of the requesters i guess i should kick this off..:)

I currently use ESXi5 free edition and have Amahi running.

I recently became aware of Proxmox and it seems to have lots of advantages.

1. more than 4 vCPUS (ESXi free limitation)
2. more native hardware support. ESXi strongly favors Intel hardware and support for anything else is sometimes an issue.
3. OpenVZ. This one has me a little excited and am looking forward to seeing it in action.
4. since the host is native Debian, i think i can use it for things like NTP, master DNS and DHCP for multiple subnets
5. i dont need a client installed on a windows PC to manage it.....all web based

I am wondering if anyone has anything to add to that?

I'm not using it for live server yet, but I have been

a) testing all amahireleases and betas within both VirtualBox and VMWare Workstation

b) testing VMWare and Proxmox and recently XenServer as potential hosts for having Amahi within as a VM.

... mainly because I'm trying to decide which host will contain my servers including Amahi

So far, the most flexible for control of IO as I've seen, is VMWare.. but that's likely because I'm not entirely familiar with the finer details of Debian (what Proxmox is at the core) versus Fedora, which apparently virtualizes as a host as well especially in version 16, which Amahi will hit soon(ish?)

I am experimenting with Proxmox for a week or so now. I accidentally stumbled across it and have been playing it ever since. It works well on my Pentium Dual core processor with 3GB RAM so far. Its a little slow, but that is expected given the hardware I am using.

There are a lot of nice features and it seems to work well even for a rookie such as myself.

the main reason i would go to PM rather than ESXi is the limitations. Specifically the 4 vCPU limit.

You cant do much with 4 cores....maybe 4 machines.

For me I have the following i run virtual:

1. Amahi
2. Vyatta
3. Windows Media Center
4. Home Automation Server
5. FTP Server hosted for work

I want to have more VMs for work lab related stuff but dont have the resources. I would love to have an i7 with 16GB+ but cant do that with ESX. I will likely switch to PM for that reason alone. Unless i become aware of some critical flaw of course

Here's an article I stumbled upon where an incredible number of OpenVZ containers (nearly 650) were active on one physical host..

http://www.montanalinux.org/openvz-experiment.html

It shows the power of openVZ and how really only the non-linux OSs need full KVM layer.... saving us precious efficiency!

I am really happy with Proxmox. I have Fedora 17 running as a VM now as well.
