Is dreamplug painless?

Postby rhubarb » Sun Sep 11, 2011 3:00 am

Hi
I am thinking about buying a plug.

Dreamplug seems to be the lastest harware. Is it supported? I want the install to be as painless as possible.

Should I get the MultiBoot option?. Will it help and why? Why does it cost extra?

Any other options I should think about?

Peter

Hi
I now own a brand new dreamplug with the multi boot option and 4GB SD card

no JTAG I am afraid. probably going to regret that

Is there anyone out there that can lead me through getting this thing configured

I have some linux ability but I am at a loss here.

Peter

PS I switched it on and it got quite warm. Seems like more then 5 watts to me

Hi
I now have my new multiboot dreamplug on the home network and can SSH into it. It is supplied with an 4GB SD card that has Debian 6.0 Squeeze preinstalled (in a file called uImage?)

So now I dont really know how to put Amahi on it. The looked at the intructions for the Amahi plug edition but was mainly confused.

I found this which might install Amahi on Debian

wget http://amahi.99k.org/debian.install
sh debian.install yourinstallcode

but I have no idea if it is the write way to go. (also I cannot find where to get a 2nd yourinstallcode (I have 1 HDA already))

any suggestions appreciated

Peter

Hello,

The only supported version of Amahi for the plug is Fedora 12. The guidance in the wiki is the most current. There have been no changes or development in quite some time.

http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Amahi_Plug_Edition

Due to recent events, we have not had the opportunity to update to Fedora 14 for it. The platform for the plug is ARM based and the traditional Fedora and Amahi installs will not work.

The wiki guidance you mentioned for debian will not work on the plug. I am afraid your only options are Fedora 12 based on the wiki or stick with what your plug came with. If you want to use Amahi, then Fedora 12 is your only choice.

Sorry, but it looks like the plug development may be slowly disappearing. We just don't have the resources to keep it going forward. With Fedora 16 knocking on the door, that will further increase our tremendous workload.

Re: Is dreamplug painless? SQL error at installation

Postby rhubarb » Tue Nov 29, 2011 3:39 pm

I have come a bit further with my Dreamplug multiboot. However I have a new error (see below)

I had difficulties setting up my SD card with Amahi so I ended up ordering the JTAG to see what was going on. This helped but maybe was not totally necessary

After a few failed attempts the following worked:
I used a GPARTED CD to format the 8GB SD
FAT16 100MB dp-kern
EXT3 7GB dp-rootfs
SWAP 1GB dp-swap

I used Ubuntu Live CD to copy and unpack the files onto the SD card. I copied and renamed the uImage file from /root to the FAT16 partition

The DP booted OK. There was a swap error which I sorted with the Amahi plug wiki

I plugged the plug into my router and configured the router DHCP to assign a fixed IP to the DP's MAC.

I can now surf to IP:2000 on the DP and get the Amahi install page. I enter the code and it gets to 39% and reports

Did you use the script from the wiki? That might be the problem. We have not had much activity with the Plug in several months.

There are some users who may be able to help. Hope they jump in and save the day for ya.

Hi
I seem to have got a bit further. (Below is from memory and bits are probably completely wrong)

it appears that my /tmp had the wrong permissions and this caused problems for the SQL install. (I unpacked the Amahi plug distro to the SD card using a Ubuntu Live CD)

chown root:root /tmp
chmod 1777 /tmp
chmod 1777 /var/run/mysqld

# but I could not log into SQL

mysql --user=root -p
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost'

# It looked like there were no DB users defined

/etc/init.d/mysqld stop
mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables &
mysql -u root
use mysql;
select * from user;
quit

# reinstalling MySQL didnt seem to help (if thats what this script is meant to do)
mysql_install_db --user=mysql --tmpdir=/tmp

#I ended up creating the root user

/etc/init.d/mysqld stop
mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables &
mysql -u root
mysql> use mysql;

INSERT INTO user VALUES ('localhost','root',password('XXX'),'Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','' ,'','','',0,0,0,0);
INSERT INTO user VALUES ('127.0.0.1','root',password('XXX'),'Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','' ,'','','',0,0,0,0);
flush privileges;
quit
/etc/init.d/mysqld stop
/etc/init.d/mysqld start

# I was now able to login to MYSQL and add the amahi DB user mentioned in database.yml
mysql --user=root -p
XXX
GRANT ALL ON hda_production.* TO amahihda@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'AmahiHDARulez';

# probably should run this to lock down MySQL
./usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation

The DP seemed to go much better when I watched the boot on JTAG

So now I restarted the DP but it did not come back onto the network. I had to use the JTAG again. It looked like it was not using the same IP anymore. My router assigns 192.168.0.20 it to the DP MAC address but

[root@fedora-arm ~]# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr F0:AD:4E:00:7D:01
inet addr:192.168.0.10 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Is this caused by Amahis DHCP? maybe it should default to OFF

Knowing the new IP I was able to surf to Amahi using HDA. Unfortunately I cannot login as either I or AMahi (or both!) dont know what the login should be

I have other problems too. All of a sudden the DreamPlug refuses to boot unless the JTAG is connected. If the JTAG is connected then it boots automatically. If it isnt connected then the DP stops at the MARVEL prompt. If I later connect the JTAG I see something like:-

** Too many args (max. 16) **
Unknown command '$&LLL06-03>' - try 'help'
Marvell>

# I can type boot here and it boots OK

Is there a logfile I can look at? I havent played with *any* uBoot settings on the MultiBoot Dreamplug.

another problem I see occasionally is when the Fedora boot gets to starting ETH0 I get

RTNETLINK answers: file exists

this seem to be intermittent. No idea what it means

So lots of problems at the mo

Sorry we cannot be of more help. When you get this sorted out, please feel free to share your experience in the wiki. We have a plug page where we try to document processes for other users to utilize.

I have decided to reinstall amah. Now that /tmp has the correct permissions hopefully it will install better this time

unfortunately I am in a catch 22 situation. Since Amahi is now running (somewhat), its DHCP has become active and so now my dreamplug cannot access the internet. I cannot log into Amahi to configure it either. Doh!

This was not a problem the first time I installed Amahi obviously.

I need to get the dreamplug to use my router for all its DHCP needs. Anyone know?

then I can continue with the install

made a bit more progress

I resintalled the root_fs partition on the DP SD card so that I could start again

I set the permissions on /tmp

chown root:root /tmp
chmod 1777 /tmp
chmod 1777 /var/run/mysqld

and setup the swap
mkswap /dev/sdb3
swapon /dev/sdb3

vi /etc/fstab
/dev/sdb3 swap swap defaults 0 0

The new DP now booted Fedora pretty well. I continued with the Amahi install and this worked well. I then restarted the DP and it boots fairly well with 2 problems

1) It doesnt boot (see above post) unless I am connected with the JTAG. It seems others have this problem
2) Starting named: [FAILED]. no idea why (will disable Amahi DHCP and DNS anyway)

Now I can surf to my HDA but I do not know the login! Doh! Where do I find that?
