Incidentally, there is thread about newer kernels being broken in the GuruPlug:

lots of "Bad eraseblock" .. however, it's not clear it's related.

I saw that thread and also have the bad block issue....Apparently it is not a problem

we can still boot and the kernel that comes with HDA has the same issue by the way

So I tested the kernel and it boots witho some warning at the ends

On a positive note I can now see and mount my sd card

I need to find out how to mount the internal nand and be able to use the wireless part of the guruplug (wifi and bluetooth)
