Yes they are Greyhole shares and yes the users are HDA users.
It is bothering me that I cannot figure it out (I'm a 30 yr IT vet.)
I'm going to post this to SuperUser for help.
SOLVED: New files cannot be seen by users
Re: New files cannot be seen by users
Could it be that Greyhole needs to do a fcsk before the files will be viewable to all users?
Just a thought. Do you have the mount_shares_locally service installed? Not sure it would help, but thought I'd ask.
Can't say I have ever had this issue. Really perplexing.

Re: New files cannot be seen by users
Thanks for persisting. I've run a greyhole fsck (and I think it runs weekly by default). Yes, I have mount_shares_locally running and those mounts show all the files but then they are mounted under my ID.
Re: New files cannot be seen by users
Try creating a new user. Then see if it can see the files.
Curious if that makes a difference.

Re: New files cannot be seen by users
I posted this to SuperUser and Guillaume Boudreau helped me find the problem. In the end, the Linux permissions & ownership were wrong. One of my drives mounted at /var/had/files/drives had permissions set to 700. The other was owned by root:root at the mount point. I had been checking the permissions at the share level (/var/hda/files and /var/hdaa/files/drives/drivex/share)
The trick to solving it was cool. He has me su to one of the broken users and walk the data tree from the root until I saw a permissions error.
Thanks again for the help.

Re: New files cannot be seen by users
Ah, makes sense. Didn't think to check the mounts.
Glad it's resolved. Will mark as closed.
