Samba issue

Postby thollis » Sun May 03, 2015 1:30 pm

Hi,

I think I have samba running, but I can not see the shares I want to (and used to) see.
I have read through the forum and followed some sound advice but still have an issue.

I had installed VNC to get a printer working connected to my Amahi server. To be honest I did a lot of clicking about I didn't quiet understand so I can't tell you what I did and did not do. In the process I lost samba (the ability to connect to my shares from my Windows laptop) and also gave up on trying to get VNC running.

Today I found this page (https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Mount_Shares_Locally) and followed that - this got my local user directory shared with success (I can see that directory from my Windows machine). However the rest of my main folders (\\hda\Music --> /home/music) are still not available. They used to be before I installed VNC.

I have read various posts about this and done the following:
  • uninstalled VNC (through the Amahi web interface)
    uninstalled cups (yum uninstall cups)
    reboot server
    connect via putty:
    yum clean all
    yum update
    yum install @gnome
Now I check samba and get the following:

Code: Select all

systemctl status smb smb.service - Samba SMB Daemon Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/smb.service; disabled) Active: active (running) since Sun 2015-05-03 20:54:17 BST; 19min ago Main PID: 1050 (smbd) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/smb.service ├─1050 /usr/sbin/smbd └─1089 /usr/sbin/smbd May 03 20:54:17 localhost.localdomain smbd[1040]: [2015/05/03 20:54:17.441428, 0] ../source3/smbd/server.c:1286(main) May 03 20:54:17 localhost.localdomain smbd[1040]: standard input is not a socket, assuming -D option May 03 20:54:17 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: Started Samba SMB Daemon. I take this to mean that samba is running, but that somewhere along the lines I have changed a config file of what to share.

Any assistance greatly welcomed!

I am a step closer ... I navigated to /etc/samba and found:
smb.conf
smb.conf.rpmsave
lmhosts
lmhosts.rpmsave

I compared the files I saw all my settings in the *.rpmsave versions.

I copied the smb.conf to a new name and changed the names of the *rpmsave to remove that extension (mv smb.conf.rpmsave smb.conf) and TA DA! My shares are back up!

HOWEVER:
I can not log in to them from my Windows laptop ... I will continue .. I am sure I am pretty much there now .....

This issue is why VNC app is no longer LIVE and freely available. There is an issue that causes samba to break.

Recommend users who have access DO NOT install it or you may break your HDA.
