Only Books and Pictures Shares Accessible

Postby mpwoodward » Fri Jul 17, 2009 11:22 pm

Just got Amahi up and running (AMAZING stuff), and everything's working like a charm except for the fact that I can only access the Books and Pictures shares. If I go to the Share listing in the administrator I see Books, Docs, Movies, Music, and Pictures, but if I browse the network from Ubuntu or Windows, or try to mount the shares directly from Ubuntu or Windows, it says I can't connect. It doesn't prompt me for a login, it just acts like they don't exist.

I checked the file permissions on the inaccessible shares and they look the same as the ones I can see. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I failed to mention that I have turned off DHCP on my router and rebooted all my machines, so they're definitely working with the shortcut urls (hda, wiki, etc.) and getting their IP addresses from Amahi.

there is still the first user issue in F10.

the first user needs to have a corresponding samba user.
you can do this by changing the password of the first user (even if you want to keep the same password).

that will "sync" them both (the linux user and the corresponding samba user, which is the "standard" in amahi).

thanks for your kind words. care to send us a testimonial for our testimonials page?

Thanks--I thought the first user issue might have been the case but I've changed the password multiple times with no luck. The first time I hit a share from Ubuntu it does ask me to log in, but even after logging in I can't see any of the shares but books and pictures.

I'll try creating another user and see if that works.

And yes, I'll be happy to write up a testimonial. :-) I'm planning on writing up a complete blog post on my experiences with Amahi.

Just created a new user and tried using that account when hitting the shares from Ubuntu but same problem--even if I manually type in the path to other shares, it says they don't exist (and I've tried both Music and music to make sure it wasn't a case issue). Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

great to hear about your upcoming blog! we will be sure to link to it!

two suggestions:
  • it could be a linux permission issue. check in /var/hda/files and see if there is something you can spot
  • the latest test rpm (in final stages of release testing) has a way to turn on samba debug. you can try that (come by the rc - we do not post links to pre-release platforms to avoid people accidentally trying stuff)
  • if you can edit smb.conf you can add

    Code: Select all

    log level = 5
in the [global] section to see the logs with more detail
combing though samba logs is ... er ... painful. we usually hit the irc channel and go to #samba in irc to get help. depends on your tolerance for pain reading the logs.

Thanks--the permissions are all the same on the directories in /var/hda/files, specifically I see:

Code: Select all

drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2009-07-14 19:22 . drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2009-07-14 19:22 .. drwxrwxr-x 2 mwoodward users 4096 2009-07-16 14:03 books drwxrwxr-x 2 mwoodward users 4096 2009-07-14 19:22 docs drwxrwxr-x 2 mwoodward users 4096 2009-07-14 19:22 movies drwxrwxr-x 2 mwoodward users 4096 2009-07-14 22:01 music drwxrwxr-x 3 mwoodward users 4096 2009-07-17 15:41 pictures
Should those directories be owned by that user? That's the first user I created while installing Fedora (and that I have since changed the password on).

For the smb.conf file, do you mean the one in /etc/samba or the one in /usr/share/hdactl/samba?

Just to give a bit more info, I just created a new share via the web-based interface, and same problem--permissions look the same as the two I can see but I can't access the new share.

Is this the user you created during the F10 install?

Yep, that's the user I created during the Fedora install.
