Rebuilding Samba shares

Postby xvj00 » Wed Jun 29, 2011 8:54 am

I cant access my shares any longer. I was having trouble writing to shares from a W7 client and to be honest I didn't realise that Amahi was controlling them. I looked at various inherited permissions at the routes of the shares and opened up anything that was restricted, although write permissions did seem to be allowed by my admin group/owners.
I'm now thinking that rebuilding the shares might be the simplest resolution. My Macbook authenticates but when i try to drill down into the folders it tells me that "the original items cant be found"

Assuming i accurately recreate the shares, will my files be intact and the new shares point to the correct locations? e.g. media/2TB/Drama
thanks,
Phil

There should be no reason to delete/recreate shares. If you are having difficulty, need to try restarting samba server first. Then check the permissions of the share folders. If you are not careful, you can really mess things up and possibly lose files.

Best to try and figure out the core of the problem versus looking for a quick fix. Is there anything specific you have modified since installation?

What tool did you use to modify the shares? Only the Amahi Dashboard should be used to prevent problems.

Hi, thanks for responding. Things seem to have resolved them selves. I'm not 100% certain which action achieved this. I checked my workgroup name and a few other things but made no changes. At one stage, when things were not working and before I twigged that Amahi should control the shares and permissions I looked in Samba and saw that all the options were greyed out, later I rechecked and they were not. I was sure however that the SMB service was running. I seems that somewhere along the line the samba.conf has been overwritten by Amahi and that things are working again, but this time they are writable. I shall leave it alone now and tread carefully in the future!!

Great, glad it worked out. Amahi does control Samba, so anything you change will be overwritten. Recommend you check out the wiki guidance on customizing Samba via the Amahi Shares interface.
