very slow smb shares

Hi,
Perhaps this should be in the network forum so please move if you think it should be...

I've hot my amahi server running well. The problem now is my transfer speeds are terrible...

I've got a d-link dir-655 hooked up to the linux amahi server through gigabit connection. If I hook up another laptop on the network(gigabit), when transferring files to an smb share I'm only getting about 1-2MB/s speed. I have no other connections on the network other than the dsl modem.

I actually found faster speed through wireless(g) but that's only about 2MB/s.

Thanks for the help.

what OS is running on your laptop?
Windows Vista (unpatched) is notoriously slow with network transfers, and XP doesn't seem to like handling very large files over the network (4GB+ files).

my personal experience with Win XP, Vista, 7 beta, OSX 10.4 and linux is that everything works fine, albeit not at full wire speed, but that may be due to driver optimalisation and a somewhat cheapish gigabit switch (non-managed, home office grade). Vista is most definately the slowest of them all and had all sorts of other issues for me. Disabling the Windows firewall relieved a lot of throughput issues though (the firewall gives you a 20-40% performance hit on throughput - casual observance).

Thanks for the reply.
I wouldn't be that bothered but the speed I am getting is just crazy slow(1-2MB/s)...
Any software anyone can suggest to check things out?

boot with a linux live cd (ubuntu) and connect to the shares.
that's quick!

good thinking... the other option is to install the pba applet (backup) on Amahi and try to boot your laptop from the network. The pba doesn't support the latest hardware but it's worth a try plus it saves you a download & burning of a CD :) you can also monitor the network traffic on the hda with gnome-system-monitor, the lowest graph is your network speed.

Where are all these applications? They are not shown from my hda applications tab.

they are in the old installer page at http://hda/myapps

note: DO NOT install new apps from this area. only pba, slideshow, amahitunes, recipes, weightwatcher and the themes are installable from this old area.

once you click, they install and you have to click on the icon to run the app.

if you install any of the new apps you run the risk of corrupting the internal app database, which will require reinstall to fix. sorry, we will remove the new apps from this area soon, and the area will be removed altogether once the remaining old apps above are ported to the new one-click online-based installer system.
