Like most users I guess, I'm recycling some old equipment to build my hda. THe motherboard I'm using only has PATA/IDE , no SATA. Because I wanted to have a large HDD for storage I bought a 1TB SATA drive and a Startech 2S1I PCI SATA IDE card, which uses the VIA VT6421A chip. THe BIOS would detect the disc and Fedora would begin to install but it would not complete. I had several attempts. Then I tried installing to an 80GB IDE drive with the card and SATA drive still connected and again failed. Last night I disconnected the SATA drive and got the installation completed on the old IDE drive. Hooray!
However, what I would like to do now is migrate the installation to the new SATA drive or at least have the SATA drive available for storage. I've read the various posts on adding new drives and haven't found one that deals with the particular issue of how to access a SATA drive via an an-in PCI card.
So my two questions are:
How do I make the new drive accessible using the card?
Would I be better to leave the installation on the small disc and have the big one as an addition, or migrate everything so that there is only a single drive?
Probably both very naive questions but I've spent hours browsing teh web and I think I'm suffering from information overload.
Thanks
Chris
Migrating Fedora/Amahi to a SATA drive
Re: Migrating Fedora/Amahi to a SATA drive
well, some of us have it setup that Fedora & Amahi is on a small disk and have other (large) disks that hold the data.
This has the advantage that if you mess up your install (or the install disk crashes) your data is still safe because it's on a different disk.
you should be able to see the card using the "lspci" command. I can't really find much info on this card on the internet for Linux support.
once it's visible and the drive is attached you can look for it by typing "fdisk -l".

Re: Migrating Fedora/Amahi to a SATA drive
Hello,
My setup is similar. I have a small IDE drive for Amahi, but use a SATA drive (NTFS) for all my data. What I did is follow the tutorial at http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding_ ... o_your_HDA.
I have mounted my SATA drive as /var/hda/files so all my amahi shares are on the separate drive from the OS. The basic command line to add to the /etc/fstab for me was : /dev/sdb1 /var/hda/files -t ntfs-3g -rw -o umask=0000.
Once I did this and rebooted, the drive showed up for use and has never left me on reboot. Keep in mind this line is specific to a NTFS formated drive, so if yours is formatted differently you would need to change it a bit.
I don't know if there is an issue with the add on card, but as long as Fedora recognizes it you should be fine. Another option is to buy a SATA to IDE adapter . I have seen these pretty cheap and they adapt the drive and power connector to work with the IDE.
Hope this helps.
