Can't connect to shares from PCs...

Postby dnorris » Mon Nov 29, 2010 11:17 am

I'm a newbie to Amahi, but I think I've got it working... somewhat.
From another PC (Win 7), I can't connect to the shares...
In Windows Explorer, I can connect to \\hda, and I see several folders, like Docs, Music, Pictures, Videos... but I can't open any of them.

However, I also see my user folder on Fedora listed, and I can open it and see many files and folders. Many of the folders are named Documents, Downloads, Music,Pictures, Public, Templates, Videos.... these folders I can open.

Is something messed up with the shares?

Recommend you check out the share troubleshooter in the wiki.

I've been thru all the help pages and the trouble shooter.
I've even re-installed Fedora 14 & Amahi a couple of times...
I can see HDA from my Win 7 computer.
I can see the shares.
The shares in HDA are set to all users.
The workgroups are the same, MSHOME.

When I try to open a share, I get the enter Network Password box...
what user name & password is required? I've tried every one, but nothing works.

DHCP is turned off in HDA, as I prefer to use my router for now.

grrrr, about to give up..............

I hope you realize Fedora 14 is not the official Amahi supported OS. We are still on Fedora 12. Fedora 14 is still in testing and not recommended for advanced users or production systems.

BTW, is did you turn on Advanced settings in the dashboard setup tab? After that, you will see a place in the dashboard under shares called setting where you need to set the workgroup. It needs to match your clients or things will not work.

I realized this afternoon that I should be using F12, so I dl'd and installed it.
It's installing some 1200 updates right now.
One of my PCs can connect to and open the shares and write to them.
The other PC can not, at the moment.

I think I'm getting closer....
After the updates and a reboot, I'll try again.

Well, I think I finally got it working.
Not near as easy as WHS, though.

Had to install Fedora 12 with the basic graphics, and this caused problems later, as I could only go up to 800x600 screen res.

I've been using an old 13 GB IDE drive for the OS, and a 320 GB IDE drive (formatted NTFS)for data. Fedora stopped recognizing the drive, although it worked fine with Win 7. I ended up formatting it, and switched IDE cable connections, and Fedora finally saw it. I got it mounted to /media/windows

I've been testing this on my WHS Vail server box, and disconnecting those drives, and connecting these drives, etc. so Vail can do my nightly backups.

I was really puzzled when my Win 7 laptop could see and use the shares, but my Win 7 desktop couldn't.
Then I realized that I had to create another user in Amahi and connect with that....
lo and behold! The instructions didn't say only one connection per user. :o

Anyhoo, it seems that I can connect, read & write to all the shares from all computers now. Now to figure out how to do backups, add another drive, etc.

There is not one connection per user unless I am missing something. I have connected from multiple machines to the HDA at the same time with one user. All were Windows 7 machines. It sounds like you had a different issue.
