Stop a drive being written to - because it's failing

Postby evylrat » Sat Apr 19, 2014 6:39 am

I have a failing drive, that has gone offline under heavy load. It still functions, but I need to return it under warranty. I'm going to get an additional drive, so I can use the GOING command. Until then, there isn't enough space on it. I'm currently backing up the drives contents, but is there a command that allows reading of the drive, but no more writing? ie just write to the other pooled drives? So if the drive goes pop my backup will still be up to date?

I guess my only other option is to put the smaller drive in amahi, and REMOVE 500gb of files that I know are on that drive, then use the going command.

Only have to remove files not found on other drive.

Only have to remove files not found on other drive.
Thought so, I can pull 500gb of stuff from the GH folder on the drive, reinsert drive and run the greyhole -f to rescan and remove the missing files.

I've removed the files causing input/output errors already, so all the remaining data should be readable.

EDIT: for those searching, I found a similar thread here viewtopic.php?f=39&t=4882

Probably a good idea. Keep in mind if the drive has issues, it's possible files could be corrupt. Be cautious on what you keep.

i would stop the service and pull the drive ASAP. I've never had a drive stay partially failed for long, and you could lose the whole thing. I wouldn't rely on it one bit.

I'm getting my replacement tomorrow hopefully. Thanks

Is there a way to check file consistency?
Or compare the files against my backup after drive swap?

You could do a checksum compare. Might need to check the internet for potential solutions.

Yes, I was thinking RSync since that compares the files. That's how I backed up the files, and that's what found 6 files it couldn't recover.
RSync would not run on my Intel Atom based Amahi box, I had to use my old quad core intel.
Thank you both for your advice.

I've always been fond of 'Beyond Compare'. It's a pretty good tool. But would have to be on the windows side of things ... it wouldn't be able to check between files on different drives in the pool
