Catastrophic Data Loss... Not sure how this happened

Postby kevinor » Fri Jan 17, 2014 11:58 pm

Evidently two nights ago ALL of my movies on my greyhole share got WIPED. I had hundreds of Movies and obviously many many tv episodes. I have a rather large log file that looks like this for so many files...

Jan 15 22:17:17 6 unlink: Now working on task ID 634331: unlink Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv
Jan 15 22:17:17 6 unlink: File deleted: /var/hda/files/Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv
Jan 15 22:17:17 7 unlink: Loading metafiles for Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv ...
Jan 15 22:17:17 7 unlink: Got 2 metadata files.
Jan 15 22:17:17 7 unlink: Moved copy from /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/gh/Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv to trash: /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/gh/.gh_trash/Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv
Jan 15 22:17:17 7 unlink: Moved copy from /var/hda/files/drives/sdb1/gh/Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv to trash: /var/hda/files/drives/sdb1/gh/.gh_trash/Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv
Jan 15 22:17:17 7 unlink: Removing metadata files for Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv
Jan 15 22:17:17 7 unlink: Removed metadata file at /var/hda/files/drives/sdb1/gh/.gh_metastore/Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv
Jan 15 22:17:17 7 unlink: Removed metadata file at /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/gh/.gh_metastore/Movies/TV Shows/Futurama/Futurama S07E08.mkv

Can someone explain to me what happened? Can someone explain why I no longer have any .gh_trash folders? I'm guess my attic is empty? I NEED TO RECOVER THESE FILES!!! And if I can't recover... I need to figure out what happened.

My other music and docs shares seem unaffected.
HELP!

Very difficult to say what the issue is here. Is it possible a share was deleted or renamed? Greyhole is typically safe and I have never heard of it deleting complete shares without some action from the user prompting it to do so.

Has there been a drive failure possibly? There is guidance in the wiki for adding a share called Greyhole Trash that will allow you to view the trash folders from a client. I typically like to use it. I check it every day to ensure no files are removed that I did not want removed by Greyhole.

You may need to scour the logs for Samba and Greyhole trying to find what prompted such a drastic change.

Not going to be a huge help here, but this may be worth asking GB about in the IRC channel.

https://github.com/gboudreau/Greyhole/wiki/GetHelp

That details running a script to gather info for him to check out.
