Usage question

Hey guys,
Just updated to the new version of Greyhole, and was curious about some of the new options:
Specifically: delete-orphaned-metadata
What does that actually do? Obviously I've read the description:
"When fsck find metadata files with no file copies, delete those metadata files. If the file copies re-appear later, you'll need to run fsck with --find-orphaned-files to have them reappear in your shares."
However, I'm still a bit confuzzled as to what the metadata file is.
Thanks in advance for helping a stranded noob!

Check out the Greyhound Web site. It explains things pretty well.

Ah, that's why I got confused.
Metadata file: a file holding information about the file copies in your pool, such as where are the different copies stored (in which storage directories), and which one is used as the target of the symbolic link (in the shared folder). Metadata files were previously known as tombstones.
Precisely what I was looking for. I had previously known them as tombstones.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Another question if I may?
Does the Newsgroups share need to use the pool?

Matter of personal preference.

Cool, as long as it doesn't break anything, that's good!
Thank you once again!

Use of Greyhole and storage pools is not mandated for any share. Unfortunately, sometimes adding certain shares to the storage pool does cause issues. Not all software/devices play well with symbolic links.

Ah gotcha, didn't know that.
Hmmmm......email report from yesterday:
Started: 2013-08-29 23:53:05
Ended: 2013-08-31 10:05:52
Duration: 34h 12m 47s
Metadata Store:
Found 0 directories
Found 347,191 files
Landing Zone (shares):
Found 0 directories
Found 14,986 files
Found 0 orphans
Problems:
Found 77900 files in the metadata store for which no file copies were found.
Those files were removed from the Landing Zone. (i.e. those files are now gone!) They will re-appear in your shares if a copy re-appear and fsck is run.
If you don't want to see those files listed here each time fsck runs, delete the corresponding files from the metadata store using "greyhole --delete-metadata='<path>'", where <path> is one of the value listed below.
Looks like I need to run delete-orphaned-metadata......unless I need to run delete-metadata on ~78000 files.......
