Confused about landing zone and pooling

Postby spline » Thu May 03, 2012 2:46 am

Hi all,

i've done a reinstallation of my HDA to set it up a little smarter than the last time.

This time, i created a partition (100 GB) for the landing zone, mounted on /var/hda/files
and a partition (about 1,4 TByte) mounted on on /var/hda/files/drives/sda.

In the control panel i checked the second partition (/var/hda/files/drives/sda) to be used in the pool while i uncked the other partition NOT to be used in the pool.
Is this correct? Or do i also have to add /var/hda/files/ to the pool?

Now, i've mounted the "Picture" share to my local PC and copied a number of files to it.
I logged in with putty on my HDA and had a look into /var/hda/files/pictures
All files are in this directory. So, the landing zone seems to work correct.
Now, i've done a "greyhole -f".
After a while, a can see the files in /var/hda/files/drives/sda/gh/Pictures and in /var/hda/files/pictures i can see only links to /var/hda/files/drives/sda/gh/Pictures

Is this correct?

Thanks and best regards

Might be best if you read this guidance. It should help explain things.

What you are seeing is correct as far as Greyhole behavior. Suggest you read the wiki page on Greyhole as well. You do not want to mess with files in the gh directories.

What's you're seeing is correct.

It's best to ignore the existence of the /gh folders as you should never feel compelled to modify anything in there. Always interact with the mounted folders on your client (/var/hda/files/*anything*)

IMHO that's a small size for a LZ, but if you're never gonna transfer a file larger than 100GB, then you're fine.

Hi,

thank you for your answers.
I wasn't shure if i had to add the LZ into the pool. But as everything seems to work fine, i've done it right in not adding it to the pool.

100 GB is more than enough for my LZ as i only copy MP3, JPGs and some ISO-Images into the shares. If i copy a large amount of data into the share (like i will d it this evening to fill the drives) i will run a greyhole -f to distribute the files over the disks and out of the LZ.
I've never seen a file with 100GB or more ;-)

And i promise: I will never touch the files in the gh directory ;-)

Best regards
