all my clients are windows Vista and Windows 7 machines.
what is the best way to access the Amahi shares?
I want to know this, because I uploaded some photos today. for some reason they were suddenly made into symlinks and therefor unreachable for my window machines.
I uploaded them in
\\hda\pictures\ (on Amahi in /var/hda/files/pictures)
but they were only symlinks in there and the got to /var/hda/files/gh/pictures???
how did the /gh/ get in there?
what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
Re: what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
last night I copied the files from the /var/hda/files/gh/pictures folder to my /var/hda/files/pictures folder and evrything seemed fine again.
this morning I started the systems and clients and the files were again changed into symlinks in the /var/hda/files/gh/pictures folder (not visible for the windows clients) and moved back to /var/hda/files/gh/pictures folder.
what the hell is going on?
the files that I am talking about were freshy copied to the server from a laptop client over wireless and came from an SD card. Why is Amahi making these changes to my files?

Re: what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
Symlinks are a result of Greyhole. Since the shares have to be manually configured to use Greyhole, you must have set that up. It is not automatic.
If you do not want to use it or the storage pooling feature, then suggest you turn it off in the Settings, Servers tab. It is not a good to move files from the gh dir manually as noted in the wiki.

I am using all Windows clients with Greyhole and have no issues. You should not see symlinks from your clients since Samba is the middleware.
Is there something you have not mentioned about your setup? Did you do any system customization? There appears to be some details missing.

Re: what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
hi Bigfoot,
thanks for the reply. I'll try to explain how I went my way:
I installed Amahi on my harddrive in a AMD2400+ system. I then transfed all the files to the amahi server by USB connection on Amahi server itself and over the network to the shared folders on the amahi server in
/var/hda/files/xxx
where xxx is pictures of movies or software or documents
I then transfered the harddrive to the VIA C7 hardware in my headless home server.
all those files seem to be fine.
I then added some files from a laptop through a wireless network connection to the amahi server.
those files seem to change overnight into symlinks. The next morning when I look at the shares...I do see the folders, but dont see the files anymore in there. they seem to have disappeared. when I then check on the amahi server through VNC I see the files have changed into symlinks and are linked to the /var/hda/files/gh/xxx folders...
aint that strange? or normal?
does this help?

Re: what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
did some more research.
the folder /var/hda/files/gh/xxx
is now holding a lot more what seem to be duplicates of files and folders I copied to the server.
these filles and folders are just fine and I can see them from my windows client.
I only seem to have the problem of no longer seeing files on the pictures share...

Re: what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
Did you read the info on Greyhole? You might need to enable the mount_local_shares script on your HDA.
All these files are moving due to Greyhole running which I presume you understand. Maybe I do not understand your situation, but symlinks are generated by Greyhole and only files should be access via the shares from Windows unless you do the script.

Re: what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
hi there. Yes I now took the time to read how to move the data for the first time. And I know where things went wrong I think.
all files that are fine, were moved over a network connection from windows machines to the \\hda\share on the amahi server.
The only files that are causing me trouble are the the ones where I connected a USB drive FAT formatted to the amahi system and using the Amahi desktop (logged in via VNC) I copied the files from the USB device to the /var/hda/files/pictures folder.
while the howto advises to let greyhole handle this for you in stead of doing this by yourself.
I now consider removing the share on Amahi, this will cause all data to be lost. the making a new share. enable storage pool right away. copying the files from a windows client over the network into new share. and then let greyhole do its magic....then it should be fine from there on.

Re: what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
okay didnt exactly do that, since removing the share, does not remove the data.
so now i logged into Amahi using VNC viewer. removed all the files in /var/hda/files/pictures
and now I am copying a fresh set of files over the network from my usb device from a windows client to the amahi share I mounted in windows using my amahi user account and password.
when finished amahi will probably 2nite move the files into the greyhole storagepool...and everything should be fine.... I HOPE!
I'llbe back!
its 80GB of photos....over 45.000 of them..so that might take a while...

Re: what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
ok. copied 80GB of files and folders into the pictures share last night over network connection.
I checked the folder today from my laptop and only 50GB of files and folder are left.
Greyhole is doing its thing, the log file is over 64mb big, and I am monitoring the log file by :
# tail -f /var/log/greyhole.log
and I can see greyhole now is still working and doing all kinds of stuff...
All other shares are just fine and all data copied into those shares is fine.
just this Pictures share is being a bitch....sorry for my words.
I will now wait for greyhole to finish and then check again how many data is left.
THANKS GOD I have a backup of my 5 years of photos which are over 45.000
I have added the last 100 lines of the current logfile of greyhole....maybe that helps?
if that doesnt work, I might go this way. just hope somebody can tell me if that is wise?

Re: what is the best way to acces the shares from Windows?
I have read this thread and I think all I can do right now is waite for greyhole to finish and see if the files are back then
http://forums.amahi.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 8&start=10
can this thread be moved into the greyhole department?
