Hi,
I am wondering when i add a file to a disk pool... how is it decided which physical disk it will reside on ?..

Current using Ubuntu Server for sharing 2 physical disks - but like the look of Amahi. My concern is that one of my disks contains all my HD content while the other disk contains Documents, Music & Pictures. Ideally i want to keep the division like that. So when I add a HD movie, it will go to the correct drive.

The other question is, if i have a ext4 disk full of content - can i simply add it to the pool without it destroying the data on it ?

If my Amahi box fails, I assume can pull out the drives and disk can be accessed in the normal manner to view the files ?

Appologies for the newbie questions - but i don't want to risk loosing my data.

From what I understand, you cannot specifically choose which disks certain data will reside on.

If you have multiple drives, you can configure Amahi so that certain shares are stored on more than one drive. For example, your Pictures share, you may want to have the maximum number of allowed copies. So Amahi will leave a copy of your pictures share on every drive in the storage pool.

The drive with the most available space is used first. Exception: sticky files (see next answer).

What you want is sticky files.
You basically tell Greyhole where to keep files in specific shares or directories.
The Music share is sticky by default, but you can edit greyhole.yml, and make all/any share sticky if you'd like.
