Drive Dead?

Postby eldano » Fri Dec 31, 2010 1:54 am

I installed my 2nd HD with no problem, but I now have a problem with the third that I wanted to add to greyhole

I followed the following wiki again
http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding_ ... o_your_HDA

And everything was going fine, till I used gparted.
All disk were visible including the new third disk. I deleted the 2 old windows partitions and created one ext4 partition
After completion gparted scanned the disks again, but the only found my 2 older ones! So the new disk I added and re-partitioned was gone.

Also when I now use

Code: Select all

ls -1 /dev/disk/by-id/ | egrep -v "part|scsi"
Only the old drives are shown.

The drive could be dead, since I took it from an old PC which died, but in the store they said it had to do with a motherboard failure. But strange that it did show up at first and now is gone.

R.I.P. little disk, or something else, any ideas?

Thanks

Is it listed in

Code: Select all

ls -l /dev/sd[a-z]
?

If it is, it might be worth trying to partition with cfdisk instead of gparted.

It gives back dev/sda and dev/sdb. Those should be the previous installed hd's. So it is not shown.

I'd try to connect it in another connector, using another cable.
At that point, check if the BIOS sees the drive, and then if Fedora sees it (it will be listed in /dev/sd[a-z] if it is).
Other than that, I'd say the drive would have issues. If you can try it in another PC, maybe that would help see if the drive or the server is causing this problem.

SOLVED
Seemed to be a faulty power connector!.
Thanks again.
