Temporary failure in name resolution ?

Postby jayrock » Thu Dec 02, 2010 10:10 am

Hi there,

my Amahi test install runs in a VMWare machine on a W2k3 server. It's on Fedora 12.

I have a problem with my Windows 7 client: As soon as I've run greyhole --fsck files are distributed to the pool I cannot see them anymore in Windows Explorer. I can see the share (folder) but not the files. However everything is there in /var/hda/files/drives/driveX.

It also doesn't help to use the IP address \\192.168.0.xxx to access the shares.

For non-pooled shares everything is ok, I can access the files w/o any problem

I noticed that I get a lot of "Temporary failure in name resolution" errors when running the "read before posting" instructions. Any clue what's going wrong? Sorry for the German logs, I haven't figures out how to change back to English for good.

By the way, same happens when I access the shares via the W2K3 host server.

Any support is welcome!

Thanks,
jayrock

1. You seem to have DNS problems on your server... Thus, all fpaste commands failed, and I can't see your config files.
You should fix that...

2. Your samba is out of date. "yum -y update" will bring all packages up to date.

3. To see why you can't see files in your share, look for symbolic links in /var/hda/files/share_name/
There should be directories and symbolic links pointing to the file copies stored in /var/hda/files/drives/*/gh/share_name/
If those symlinks are missing, look for error in /var/log/greyhole.log
"greyhole --debug some_file_name" should give you the appropriate lines from greyhole.log (amongst other things) for GH processing the specified file.

Thanks for the quick reply. Well, yes, I deliberately deactivated the DNS server - after all it's a test setup, so I wanted to use the DNS proxy in my router (standard gateway). This apparantly doesn't work, I cannot access any web page (which I didn't notice before). It's clear that this is not a Greyhole question but more an Amahi matter: Can I not use the DNS proxy in my router?

Once I activated DNS it did indeed work. Another question here: It's stated clearly that one should use Fedora 12 and nothing else, isn't there a risk that those updates break the verified configuration?

Anyway, after all updates and a restart the files still don't show up in Windows Explorer.

The symbolic links were all there from the beginning. I've been running "greyhole --debug Document0.pdf" with the following result. Note the strange message saying there is -3 GB available... the pool drives are 8 GB each and only a few MBs stored on them.

Code: Select all

yum -y update will always stay on Fedora 12.
It just installs updates released for F12.

Amahi expect drives bigger than 10GB...
It hard-codes a minimum free space of 10GB per drive it adds to the pool, so in your case, 8GB - 10GB = -2GB, minus the space already used. This is where the -3GB comes from, and also what triggers "Warning! All storage pool directories are over-capacity!"
Anyway, as long as your drives still have space on them, it should continue to work fine.

Try to run a fsck on that particular dir, and look in /var/log/greyhole.log for errors:

Code: Select all

greyhole --fsck --dir "/var/hda/files/freigabe2999"

Two interesting parts:

- Dec 2 21:38:08 7 fsck: Not a directory... Aborting.

and:

- Dec 2 21:38:08 2 fsck: Can't insert in tasks_completed: database is locked

What do they actually mean?

Cheers, jayrock

That log seems to indicate you have two greyhole daemon running...

Code: Select all

ps auxww | grep greyhole.*daemon
Anyway, the fsck seems to indicate that all is fine.
Do you have correct symlinks in your share (/var/hda/files/freigabe2999) now?

"database is locked": caused by having two processes trying to save in the database at the same time.

Hi, seems there are indeed two daemons running. No clue why. Just did a clean install a couple of days ago, with no changes but via the Amahi control center.

Symbolic links seem ok as well (have been like this from the beginnning). They still show up on the server, and the real files are there as well. But Windows Explorer shows an empty directory.

Again, shares that are not pooled show all files in Windows Explorer.

Any more ideas?

Code: Select all

I noticed that the owner of the symbolic links is root:root, whereas the real files belong to my_username:users. Could that be the case?

To check I tried to change the ownership of the links with chown my_username:users *, but this doesn't work, the owner is still root.

EDIT: chown works now (forgot the "-R"), so I managed to change the user, but still no files in Windows Explorer.

You need to keep only one GH daemon running.
Get the PID of the running GH processes with this:

Code: Select all

ps auxww | grep greyhole.*daemon | grep -v grep | awk '{print $2}'
For each of them, do this:

Code: Select all

kill PID
For example:

Code: Select all

kill 1806
Finally, restart only one instance:

Code: Select all

service greyhole restart
The owner of the symlinks doesn't matter. It's the owner of the copies the links point to that matters.

Logged as your user (the same you use to connect to the share), try to go in that directory in a Terminal, and see if you can list the files (symlinks) in there:

Code: Select all

ls -la /var/hda/files/freigabe2999/ ls -la /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/gh/freigabe2999/
Execute the following commands in a terminal, when logged as the user connecting to the share, then check which files you can see on the share, from a remote computer:

Code: Select all

cd /var/hda/files/freigabe2999/ touch file1 ln -s file1 file2 ln -s /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/gh/freigabe2999/Document0.pdf file3 ln -s /etc/group file4
Repeat the same test on the Stuff share:

Code: Select all

cd /var/hda/files/stuff/ touch file5 ln -s file5 file6 ln -s /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/gh/freigabe2999/Document0.pdf file7 ln -s /etc/group file8

Re: Temporary failure in name resolution ?

Thanks for the reply. Here are my observations:

- The daemon stuff is ok now, fixed that already myself.

- Now, when I look at the files in /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/gh/freigabe2999/ as the user, I get "Keine Berechtigung" - "no access", however if I'm ls -l them as root, it indicates the user is the owner (Remember that I manually changed the owner of the symbolic links for the pdf documents):

Code: Select all

[jayrock@localhost ~]$ ls -la /var/hda/files/freigabe2999/ insgesamt 8 drwxrwxr-x 2 jayrock users 4096 5. Dez 06:26 . drwxr-xr-x. 6 Jayrock users 4096 2. Dez 17:46 .. lrwxrwxrwx 1 jayrock users 58 2. I also ran the set of ln commands. In the terminal, as user, I can see files1-4 and files5-8 (you actually see 1-4 above). However, in Windows Explorer I don't see file3 and file7 - ie. the symbolic links to /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/gh/ ......

Any ideas what's going wrong?

One more remark, my Windows user name is "Jayrock", starting with a capital letter. I used the same as username in Linux (and it shows like this on the login screen), but the output above is obviously using the lower writing except "..". Probably s.th. mixed up with the user names?

Cheers,

jayrock

EDIT: Changed the ownership of the files in /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/gh/freigabe2999/ to "Jayrock", but no improvement.
