It could be faster than that, but it might not.
It depends on what your server is doing at this time.
If GH is already working on moving files, your copy operation will be much slower, since there's another process using the same hard drive(s) at the same time.
Same for all other processes running on your server at any given moment (Transmission etc.)
10GB in 12 minutes is 14.2MBps, which equals about 114mbps. That's faster than the theoretical maximum speed of your router, and probably much faster that it would be for real, since the theoretical maximum is not often reached in the real world.

...and you're right, copying from the terminal is a quite handy and fast means of commanding your hda to do something, if you use the TAB-key. Even though coping between shares could have been faster in my perfect world
