So I have a bad feeling the answer to this problem is going to be i'm SOL, but I have a failing (failed?) harddrive in my server that's currently added to the greyhole share. I'm all set to remove it from the greyhole share and pop in a new one, but I can't seem to mount/access files on the harddrive (I get I/O errors all over the place).
This all happened after I lost power and had to install a vga attachment to the debug board (it's a headless server that was refusing to put far enough for me to use putty). That's when i discovered the reason it was getting stuck (initially) was due to needing to "OK" (press F1) to ignore the message about the failing hard drive. That was problem #1
Now, the second drive (sdb, not the boot drive), which is the one failing, does not seem to want to mount (or something). I've run fsck using a live usb key, which didn't find any errors. I'm getting a couple different errors when I'm able to login:
when i run fdisk -l I get:
[ string of numbers] end request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 0
[ string of numbers] Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 0
Then, every so often, I get a scrolling list of
[ string of numbers] end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector "more numbers"
Any thoughts? Or is the harddrive totally crashed and I've basically lost everything from the greyhole share that was on that drive?
Note: other than that, the server seems to work fine- for the moment, I have the 2nd hd pulled just to minimize errors.

Re: Drive failing, cannot mount to remove from greyhole
It does sound like you may not be able to recover data off the drive. If you had copies set to max for Greyhole, a copy should be on the good drive.
If you cannot mount the bad drive, that pretty much says you will not easily recover any files. I would recommend you try using a Live CD and see if you can recover anything.
Power outages can be quite disastrous and a UPS is highly encouraged.

Re: Drive failing, cannot mount to remove from greyhole
Ok thanks for the info- I was afraid that was going to be the issue. I'll try to plug the drive into another computer and boot up using a live CD to see if I can at least access anything off of it- when I used the live USB on the actual server, it was able to (sort of) load the drive because I could see /gh and /lost and found, but couldn't access either actual folder. Thanks again!
Re: Drive failing, cannot mount to remove from greyhole
No problem. Hopefully you can snag the /gh folder and save your files.
BTW, to remove from Greyhole, follow this guidance:
