So I just purchased an external 4bay HD case. I hooked it up with eSata and added a drive. All good. I then added the new drive to my Greyhole share. Still all good.
Now for my question. I would like to take a drive out of my internal computer case and add it to the external case. The reason is the external box is better for cooling the drive. Anyway, the internal drive is part of my Greyholw pool. How can I move the drive and keep it in my pool. Will Linux see the drive as "new" since it is hooked up in a different location (on an eSata card instead of the internal Sata controller)?
I would love to just pull the drive, install in new case, then edit a few config files and have the drive continue to work. Not even worry about recopying files. Is that possible? Thanks.
Moving a drive to external case, can I keep in Greyhole?

Normaly, yes. That's the beauty of the UUID. The drive should get a new assignment in /dev/, but as you don't touch the drive structure itself it should keep the same UUID.
And as I understand, greyhole is seeing the disks as mount points, so it shouldn't care about what device the drive is under.
But beware, this is the theory, and I have never done this myself. So just make sure and confirm that the UUID of the new /dev/ stays the same as the one in /etc/fstab, as explained here: https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding ... o_your_HDA, and you should be fine. (in case the UUID changes you would edit fstab with the new UUID for the same mount point).

Agree with bigmango,
In theory the drive should still have the same UUID, but if for whatever reason it would change, just update /etc/fstab with the new UUID and the same mount point.
Of course I cannot promise this will work. However, since the drives (with their unique UUID) are defined in /etc/fstab, it shouldn't matter in which sata port they are connected to.
Good luck!

Jonathan,
This is a little of topic (maybe completely off topic), but how did you get the esata case to work? I've got a five drive case that I'm trying to build into my server but I've been unable to get Amahi to recognize it.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

First, thanks bigmango and sandstroem. Your advice totally worked. I just moved the drive from the internal SATA port to the eSata case and it all worked! That's too cool.
Next, rcrh I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help. I purchased this product (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6816132029) and it comes with a very simple eSata card (Siliconlmage 3132). This card does not support RAID, but it does support port multiplier. Linux has all the necessary drivers for this card in place, so all I did was plug in the card, then plug in the box and all the drives work.
If I had to do any config I'd share that, but honestly I did nothing. Hope you get yours working. My drives run at least 30oF cooler in the external box.
