You can indeed copy the files directly into the landing zone on the HDA, then run a "greyhole --fsck" to have Greyhole process those new files.
Ah ok, I though that was where Samba put them for greyhole? (or something)...

Yes. The landing zone, which is /var/hda/files/share_name by default, is where Samba put the files you copy when you add files from a remote computer.
If you put the files at the same place where Samba would have put them, then run --fsck, GH will pick them up as if Samba had put them there.
