Hello All.

I'm a linux newbie and this is my first real exposure. I did use Unix doing some GIS work in the early 90s but it's all new again. I love the HDA concept and what it could allow me to do. I've been able to get most all of the things I wanted out of it but using the VPN has eluded me. I can currently connect the VPN from within my home network and ping my HDA. However when I try to connect from anywhere else I get a TLS handshake timeout error. From searching the internet I'm guessing I'm running up against a firewall issue but I've forwarded 1194 from my router to my HDA IP, at my office I forwarded 1194 from the router to my laptop but still the same errors. I've also opened 1194 in the Vista firewall. Any ideas on what I might be missing?

I'm using the hdaconnect client on my Vista Home Premium laptop as my client box.

Edit: OOPS! I am not able to ping my server when connected through my home network. I was Pinging myself (client.) As I mentioned I am a newbie. I ran ipconfig on my machine and noticed the subnet mask is 255.255.255.252 but I'm not sure how that was assigned or if it's significant.

note that the protocol is UDP - this is easy to overlook.

you only need to forward from the router to the HDA's ip.

try that and see if it helps!

subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, but that's prob not the issue w/ your vpn. turn off vista's firewall, and see if you can connect. that will either eliminate it as the problem, or prove that it is. you might want to try enabling outside ping response on your router, and then see if you can ping it from work. that will tell you if you're at least getting a connection to your house. there is also always the possibility that your isp is blocking port 1194. i don't know if any of them do, but it is a possibility.

Thanks for the replys. I checked and I have designated the forwarding as UDP. I tried connecting with Vista Firewall off and same result. I will try the pinging the router tomorrow. Thanks again for the support.

OK, having a problem finding the setting to allow my router to be pinged. I did notice something I'd forgot about when I installed my router though. My router would not function with the default IP of 192.168.1.1. I had to change the router address to 192.168.2.1. Now when I look at the router information it shows this for my internet connection information:

Automatic Configuration - DHCP
Internet IP Address: 192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS1: 192.168.1.1
DNS2:
DNS3:
MTU: 1500
DHCP Lease Time: 30 Days

My router information shows:

Router IP Address: 192.168.2.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

DHCP Server
DHCP Server: Disabled
Start IP Address: 192.168.2.100
End IP Address: 192.168.2.149

I never was able to figure out why I had that problem. I'm not sure if it's related.

I'm confused. Is all that information from your router, or is the first part from one of your computers? If it's from one of your computers or the HDA, I'm surprised that you can get out to the internet from home.

I'm sorry for not being clear. I'm getting quite confused myself and I guess I'm passing it on. That information is all from my Linksys router. There is a section describing the 'Internet connection' which is on top and then a section describing the router 'on bottom.'

this might be a dumb question, but is the HDA connected to the WAN side of your router? the internet address in your post looks like it was assigned by the HDA.

i think some routers (typically ppp), use the 192.168.1.*

the situation here is confusing. networking can be confusing.

i would get do this:

• get things back to working, without the HDA box being connected. make sure you can connect to the network
• get the HDA connected and working. make sure it itself can conenct to the internet
• then, when all is working, try to turn off *only* the dhcp *server* in the router
