SOLVED: Openvpn not working

Postby maartenpelgrim » Thu Nov 03, 2016 4:42 am

Hi there,

I have installed the Openvpn app on my Amahi 9 server (Fedora 23), but I cannot seem to connect. I have looked at the wiki and the troubleshooting page, but I couldn't find a solution there. Here is my setup:
  • - Modem connected to the internet
    - Router (192..168.0.1) connected to the modem
    - HDA (192.168.0.10) Connected to the router
I have DHCP running on the HDA. As instructed, I forwarded a port on the router, 1194 UDP. I also tried port forwarding to 443 TCP, but not result.
Help is much appreciated, many thanks in advance!

There are many things that could be the cause. A firewall on your client, network, or even ISP blocking the port.

Check the Dashboard to ensure the OpenVPN service is running. Also check /var/log/amahi-app-installer.log for errors.

Recommend you check those things first. Then try checking if your ISP is block the port using Can You See Me web site. There are other sites you can check as well.

Finally, ensure you have correctly forwarded the port on your router. There are many routers where it's not so obvious.

Hi there Bigfoot,

In an unexpected way, you have helped me in my thinking about this problem; it is now solved! The 'CanYouSeeMe' website helped me insofar that, according to it, not a single port (and believe me, I tried a lot of them) could be accessed, which I knew not to be true.

In short, the problem was that the modem is in fact one of those modem/routers provided by my ISP. Although I had forwarded port 1194 from my router to the HDA, this was not enough. Then I decided to try if it would help if I also forwarded port 1194 from my modem/router to my main router. As soon as I did that, the whole thing jumped into action, and everything is working really well now!

I am as happy as i little schoolboy now!

Happy that I was able to assist. This brings to light a good point that might affect other users with regards to the modem needing to forward a port.

Is this perhaps something you (or I, for that matter) could add to the wiki and troubleshooting pages on VPN?

Yes would be good if you can add it to the wiki.
