CLOSED: Nighthawk R700 Port 1194 Forward Issues?

Postby jaylanzy » Tue Sep 29, 2015 5:39 pm

I just spent the worst 3 hours of my life talking to a Netgear rep on the other side of the world. Has any one has any luck opening port 1194 for OpenVPN access using a netgear nighthawk r7000 router. The information that i just received from support was as soon as you turn off the DHCP function on the nighthawk, you lose the ability to port forward. Can anyone confirm this. Is there an acceptable work around or do i just have another expensive paperweight. I have been scouring the bowels of the tech support websites and have found only dead ends. Could they be right?

With that being said, anyone have a recommendation for a router that works easily with the amahi set up and has a long range.

Oh, and does anyone want to buy a r7000?...cheap!

How about this to make things easy for yourself.

Leave the DHCP server on, but restrict it to a single IP address. Make it the one for your HDA.

Some routers let you set the start and end DHCP IP range. You may also be able to assign DHCP lease my MAC address.

This will allow you to do port forward and yet use the HDA for DHCP server capabilities on your network. I have mine set up this way and it works great. BTW, I don't have a Netgear but it should work for pretty much any router.

Although Airport Express is Apple specific, it will explain what I mentioned above.

Thanks! it seems like a perfect, common sense, easy fix. Unfortunately for me, it still does not work. I am at my wits end. The Apple Airport describes the fix well, but the link for more info is 404. I have tried it with window 7 fire wall on & off. I have repaired windows firewall, i have tried TCP 1194. I have tried UPnP on then off. Factory reset router. Rebooted router after every change. Modem in bridge mode (currently). Just there is no confusion the set up is as follows...ISP into cable modem (bridged) into the wireless router into the HDA with DNS & DHCP activated and the DHCP activated using only the HDA address as the point (192.168.1.10). Used a port forwarding program & tester. Repaired registry issues. Could there be something simple i am missing?!

Does anyone else have any other suggestions? What is the MACS workaround? What else can it possibly be?

Has anyone been able to get this thing to work using R7000 and how in gods name did you do it? While you are at it, recommendations on router.

Sorry to hear that did not work for you.

Maybe there is another user with the same problem that can assist. Sorry but there is not much more we can do to assist.

can you forward a port to 1194 but cannot access your HDA or is port forwarding not allowing you to set a port?
I also noticed there is a VPN setup in advanced settings.....

The port sets fine. I use a port testing program and it fails. What else could I be doing wrong? I see you have the same router. What settings do you use?

I tried to connect to my HDA with the Amahi OpenVPN client from work, but the handshake is timing out. I'll check router logs this evening when I get home. My router is new too, I haven't tried remote connection yet.............
I just noticed there is a Wiki for that.................."Prevent SSL Handshake Timeouts In OpenVPN" :)

Sorry bird, I'm getting a TLS handshake failed. The Control Panel OpenVPN tester shows inactive too. I don't log in remotely very often, so I don't us this feature much. When I get time I will investigate further. You tried Bigfoot's workaround?

I have tried everything. Bigfoot workaround i though for sure was going to work. I am going to try a different router to see if i can at least get through. I will let you know which brand works and how i did it. I am planning to reconfigure the relationship between the cable modem and the wireless. Currently i have the modem in bridge mode. My plan is to unbridge, and place the modem outside of the environment using DMZ. I have continued to find other work around's but still no coherent solution. I will keep you posted.

help us bill gates, you're our only hope.
