Where do I do the port fowarding? My DSL modem or my router?

I use a wifi/router hooked to a DSL modem.

Where do I do the port fowarding? The router? The modem? Both?

It seems like both can foward port 1194 to 192.168.1.10 (which is what I have Amahi set to.)

(thanks for tolerating another newbie question)

Wherever your firewall is. Some DSL modems have one.

It's very rare that you have two firewalls one in front of the other. In that very rare case, then the hole needs to be punched in both, though a better solution would be to remove one.

If both can do it, the modem is probably best and just use the router as a switch and wifi access point with no firewall.

OK, thanks for the tip (and generally for the help)

But, wow did I do something wrong! I managed to knock myself totally off the internet and had to do a hard reset of the modem.

All the instructions make this seem easy but I'm sure having a Dickins of a time with it even after I tried the port fowarding.

The OpenVPN tester (in Amahi) says "inactive... enable it" but I don't see an "enable" button or controls at all. I assumed from the Wiki documentation, this meant the port fowarding but am I wrong?

People get confused with port forwarding. It's somehow challenging.

Yes, by enable it we mean do the port-forwarding.

Search for port forwarding and the model of your router or modem (wherever you are doing it).

For me the challenge is the approximately 15,000 speciality terms and acronyms combined with 20,000 menus and sub-menus on my router and modem. :)

Anyway, thanks for your help. I might be rock and rolling. The Amahi panel now tells me to get client VPN software, so I assume that's progress.

Where I went wrong, I believe, was that I set my modem in bridging mode but did not set my PPPoE username and password in the router.
