router/ssh/vnc/freenx

Postby pbecks1963 » Tue Dec 16, 2008 6:18 am

Hello all,

My Amahi server is up and running and i am trying to get to it remote (using either vnc or freenx). I have install (as service) vncserver (and later) freenx. Both don't work. I have opened the apropriate ports in the router. Should these ports also be opened in the iptables?? (for vnc 5900 5901, 5800) (for vpn UDP port 1194)

Some info: my router = 192.168.1.1, Amahi server = 192.168.1.5, Xp-pc = 192.168.1.100.

I managed to use pxe/pbbackup to make an image of my xp-pc to the amahi-server... (yeh!, one point for me)
I also use to be able to get remote on the amahi server with either putty or WinSCP but i think the firewall at work has closed port 22!)

Other things i have on my wishlist:

-Firefly (i already now that one from my old freenas server)
-website (photoalbum)
-synchronize folders/documents from my external-hd (which is attached to the xp-pc) to the amahi-server.

Any ideas/hints YOU can give me?

i would recommend going at it in stages.

you should try to get vnc/freenx going locally first. guide here.

once that works, then attempt it remotely!

VPN into your box, then run your ssh, freenx, etc. and you won't need to open any ports in your firewall.

Exposing those ports to the internet is a bad idea.
