Hello
I have a problem with VPN due to the remote computer (Windows 7) being on the same subnet as my home network and the client cannot connect, please see attached log XX for security I am pretty sure I have set the port forwarding on my router correctly
Is there a way around this ? I read in the forums about bridging the connection but this seems tricky and possibly risky especially for a linux newbie like me.
Or Am I taking the wrong approach entirely, what I want to do is enable a couple of friends to log into my server remotely using a secure connection to read write and edit a private folder each and have read access to a common "public" folder
same subnet issue
Re: same subnet issue
I have heard the best solution is to change the HDA network subnet. It is the simplest way around this issue.

Re: same subnet issue
There are ways around it but not simple for a Novice to be honest.
You would need to setup your VPN to use NAT. Not easily accoumplished using consumer network hardware.

Hello
The DHCP server in my HDA is turned off at the moment as per installation instructions apparently having two running could cause a clash
would I need to update my control panel if i did this or would the HDAs DDNS updater do it automatically
Regards Mark
How would I go about that as NAT and DHCP are handled by my router (Gateway\Switch to give it it's proper name) I presumably need to set this there What would you recommend changing it toI have heard the best solution is to change the HDA network subnet. It is the simplest way around this issue.

Re: same subnet issue
Many routers allow you to choose the subnet. Recommend you check your router user manual. If you were using the HDA for DHCP, then you would need to change the gateway IP via command line.

Re: same subnet issue
Hi all
I have managed to get OpenVPN to connect to the Remote Machine now (Win 7) and I can get the remote machine to see the Server as another machine on it's LAN but how can I get to the shares. HTTP://servername.com/var/hda/files perhaps
I think I am close but just not able to access the shares
Anybody know how to do it
Regards Mark

Re: same subnet issue
For Windows 7, you should be able to access them the same as if you were on your network (\\hda).
BTW, there is a Windows VPN Client called HDAConnect that works well. You cannot access shares via web browser unless you install one of the Web file managers like AjaXplorer. There are a few available for Amahi.

Hello
I'm using HDAConnect to create the tunnel but all I get when I click on the network entry
for S******(servername).com is an empty folder and I can't copy/paste anything into it
I get A Windows error saying an unknown error is preventing windows from accessing this
folder or something like that. I will try to recreate it when I next access my remote machine and post it
I have also tried Adito with partial success I can download files from the HDA, fairly slowly,
but that is to be expected with domestic broadband links. It is bearable though I wasn't expecting sparkling performance. Uploading to the HDA is another matter file transfer is incredibly slow. even a small JPEG about 250KB or so takes a couple of minutes to upload
to make matters worse Adito gives no indication as to how long the transfer will take Downloads of course use Firefox's download mechanism so I know.
I use Teamviewer for this sort of stuff on Windows boxes which seems to work quite well
Is there anything similar for Amahi.
If It helps here are brief specs for both Machines
HDA
Athlon XP 1800+ RAM 1.75GB Realtec 10/100/1000Mbps net card (Hawking Technology)
Fedora/Amahi
Remote Machine
Pentium 4HT (2 Thread Mode) 500MB RAM onboard 10/100 LAN
Windows 7 Ultimate
Routers Huawei Echolife HG532 (both ends)

Re: same subnet issue
Maybe there is a firewall causing issues? When I use HDAConnect, I am able to do all things as if I was in the network.
You can install TeamViewer on the HDA, but it would be all manual process and require desktop access to complete.
Another option might be to install a FTP server on the HDA, then forward the applicable ports if needed. That would allow you to move files via WinSCP or something similar. I am sure you can find some guidance in the wiki or google to do this.

Re: same subnet issue
Hello
Many thanks for your advice on this I think firewall blocking may well be the problem.
My Windows 7 client machine has AVG business edition Installed which includes a Firewall and Windows has of course got it's own so I effectively have two (although I believe that AVG picks up its initial settings from The Windows one).
AVG asks permission for the program to make the connection when I start HDA connect which I always grant but have not saved as a permanent rule yet I will do.
If Windows built in one is " further down the chain" as it were that may be causing the problem. I will temporarily (and very briefly) turn them both off and see what happens.
I will then need to know which ports to turn unblock presumably just 1194 or will I need to unblock the virtual one as well If it is static.
If This fails then your suggestion about an FTP server may be the way go or possibly SFTP or FTPS (they are two different things apparently)
Can I assume that Amahi does not have a firewall as standard I guess it wouldn't need one, this will rule out any trouble at the server end. I am pretty sure that neither router is set up to firewall so we can hopefully rule them out.
My HDA is not running headless so I do have CLI access to it locally and I also got VNC to work quite easily. So with a bit of help A Teamviewer install is a possibility but perhaps in the future when my Linux experience improves (it is doing so and quite rapidly)
BTW I am finding this whole Amahi experience really enjoyable and liberating. I am building a top class HDA for next to nothing (Open source software and bits of old P.C. that were lying around) by the time I am finished I will have an HDA that will rival any commercial unit (in fact eat 'em for breakfast). Only real cost will be some big hard drives. you can't get away from that one they've gone through the roof since the floods. I think you have a real winner here.
