Help with IPsec on Linux client

Postby thomasps » Sun Apr 08, 2012 1:18 pm

Can someone help me with setting up IPsec VPN on ubuntu client? I have installed L2TP IPsec VPN Manager 1.0.6 as detailed here:
http://www.tuvpn.com/en/tutorials/l2tp- ... hal#step-0

Then i put the following:
Remote Server: myusername.yourhda.com
Server identity: <empty>
Use pre-shared key: <my psk as shown on IPsec Amahi app>

In PPP tab:
Allow these protocols: I checked only CHAP but played around with the others
Usernmae: myusername
Password: mypassword

So far it doesn't work. I noticed I did not place the "group name", not knowing where to put that.
Thanks for any help.

Have you checked out the wiki? There was some guidance there I believe.

Ah, did not know that. You may have to use google to find out how to do it. There may be a user here who has a similar setup and hopefully they can help.

Ok no luck. So I'm going to use OpenVPN instead. Just one question: is having both OpenVPN and iPsec going to coause any problems/conflict?

Should not have any problems. I am running both on my HDA and have successfully connected with both from clients.

The IPsec-VPN app is a pure IPsec VPN not an L2TP/IPsec, so the client you've referred to in the original post won't work. I've not used a linux client with it previously as OpenVPN seemed to do the job most of the time; the main motivation for the app was to enable iOS devices to connect.

Understood. Thanks for clarifying. I was hoping to have a single VPN server and not having to manage two different VPN.

There is an L2TP/IPsec version in the wiki that you can install manually. I use it on my Android phone with 2.3.5 and no issues. The Amahi version is not compatible of course with Android < 4.0 so that's why I came up with this version.
