Hi. I have a NAS at home and would like to be able to VPN into it remotely. As I understand it, I need a VPN remote access server that I would then log into when away from home. Would a spare computer running Amahi work as a remote access server? Any tips other than "install Amahi and follow the VPN instructions?"

If the NAS is another machine running its own OS, then Amahi will not help. You would need to install VPN server software on that machine.

Need more info to provide a better response.

Thanks bigfoot. It's a D-link DNS-323 NAS. Looks like it has some ftp capabilities but no VPN. I'd rather not try to hack the NAS as I'm not that computer literate.

Originally I was going to use an old computer with Amahi as the server and VPN portal. However, I couldn't afford to have my home network down and depending on me to get Amahi configured right. So we got the NAS which is basically plug and play and idiot proof.

I also like the idea of having a NAS that always works, and a VPN portal that is separate. So if my Amahi box goes down or I mess up a configuration, the NAS is unaffected. I can live without VPN for a while, but need my NAS up and running 24/7.

So, my particular NAS does not support VPN. That is why I'm thinking I need an Amahi box to take care of that part. Do you think they can work in tandem? I imagine if the Amahi VPN can get me into the network, I'd be able to see my NAS.

Could you not mount your NAS folders on your HDA in /mnt or somewhere else, share it and then VPN into the HDA.
I've done this for Transmission rather than VPN access but it sounds a similar outcome.
My NAS mounts into /var/hda/files/downloads and that is set as a share on my HDA.
I can access the folder via my NAS or my HDA through my LAN.
You would be able to access the NAS locally if the HDA was down and then via the HDA when you are VPN'ing (if that is what you are trying to do)

Yes, that is what I'm trying to do. So it seems like it would work. On a side note, someone suggested to me that a simple VPN router would do the trick.

Does anyone know if this is true? As much as I like what I see of Amahi, it may be overkill if all I need is a way to VPN into my NAS.
