[SOLVED] OpenVPN works, but no remote DLNA or DAAP :(

Postby mehmetb » Fri Mar 05, 2010 12:46 pm

Hi everyone,

OpenVPN works great for me, but I cannot use media steaming services such as Amahi-dlna or AmahiTunes remotely. These services work just fine at home, however. OpenVPN should make remote computers as if they are a part of the home network, isn't it? What am I missing here?

Thanks! :)

PS: I am sure OpenVPN is working because I can access Amahi dashboard and all shared volumes.

this has to do with broadcasting of network packets to find services.

these packets do not go across the vpn.

to make this work you would need to set up the vpn in bridged mode. not too easy.

Cool, worked like a charm. It was easy enough, like everything else with Amahi :)

Thanks so much...

Hey guys

I've also tried this via the bridged mode and while I do get the hda derived IP address that I set up using the instructions, I don't get access to the dlna library through WMP. Now thi smay be because of bandwidth issues but are there any other things I should look out for?

does it work locally in the network?
(i.e. no VPN)

All works fine on the network. both dlna and daap servers. I can access transmission and also the wiki server from vpn so seems to be mostly working. DNS also seems to be fine.

Himmm... Have you tried installing another DLNA client, such as XBMC? Maybe it's a WMP problem (?) You should at least be seeing the friendly name of your DLNA server ("Amahi" as default) even tough you have limited bandwidth...

I installed the ghastly iTunes to see if I can see the daap server the next time I am out of the local network. Will report back

OK an update...

OpenVPN working a treat and when I use itunes, I can see the Amahitunes library and play music from it which is +1 for DAAP because I am still unable to see the DNLA libraries using WMP. Can anyone suggest an alternative client to test this on? I might give winamp a go as I think that has support for DLNA. Will report findings.....

So, somethign quite strange is happening now. I can now see the dlna and daap shares by vpn on WMP and iTunes respectively. I decided to invest in two 500Gb drives as I had been testing Amahi on some old 60Gb ones I had lying about in the system. I did a clean re-install and copied the media files across to the new drives and upon login from work, I can now see everything. I haven't done anything different on setting up the bridge connection so it might just have been a random one time bug that crept in to the old build.

Anyway, a happy ending from me and very pleased with Amahi so far. Keep up the good work fellas.
