Testing VPN from Home

Postby andy1878 » Tue May 25, 2010 12:12 am

When I set up my first HDA I wanted to find out what it could and couldn't do for me without encroaching on my exsisting network so I created the HDA with a different subnet (192.168.1.0/24) instead of the the one I normally use - the intention being to change to the new addresses or build a better HDA with the exsisiting IPs (192.168.10.0/24)- Then I built a little network on the bench using the HDA broadcast domain with a netgear cable router as a switch, with the DHCP server off. Once I had this network running I could evaluate how things worked.

It didn't take long before I patched the WAN side of the HDA router into the exsisting network. I gave this port a fixed IP, 192.168.10.2 and set up my exsisting router to forward VPN traffic on port 1194 to the HDA domain router and inturn made the HDA domain router forward the port to the HDA.

A client on the 192.168.10.0/24 domain can now VPN into the HDA on 192.168.1.0/24

The VPN Client traffic goes out onto the internet and comes back in again, normally it fails because the IP addresses should be different on the client and server networks. However because it is forwarded across its own client domain and into the server domain, which is on a different IP, a connection is esthablished.

Ok so I'm using bandwidth, not a problem to me. However for testing purposes it saved me a lot of hassle. Thought I'd share - It may be of help to others.

Cool! Ingenuity is what we're all about! In my case, our ISP makes 2 IP addresses available to our cable modem. I just put a switch in front of two wireless routers, one has the HDA hardwired to it, the other I leave for test purposes and emergencies. When I want to VPN, I just connect to the other router.

FYI, cpg added a feature to the Control Panel at amahi.org that tests the VPN for you and gives you a green light if it is setup properly.

Cheers,

Pat
