Howdy gang
I posted my issues in the newbie forum: http://forums.amahi.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 3&start=10
and we haven't been able to get my VPN to work.
Maybe someone here can offer something new.
I have confirmed that my service provider does not block ports and that I have the correct UPD port forwarded to the server on my router.
VPN should work, but it doesn't
Re: VPN should work, but it doesn't
Hi,
I would like to tag onto your thread as I have exactly the same problem. I can access torrents via a forwarded port with no problems, but every time I try to check my vpn via the amahi dashboard it says it is not enabled. I have 1194 UDP forwarded, the server is running and all should be fine, but it doesn't work. I was wondering about trying changing the port and using tcp instead of udp, but I wanted to see if anyone could help here first.

Recommend you check out the network troubleshooter and see if anything is wrong there.
http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Network_troubleshooting
Then if not, start looking at log files to for potential clues. I presume you have turned off your DHCP/DNS server features in your router.

Re: VPN should work, but it doesn't
This is the point where linux starts to fail. Products like Amahi try to appeal to ordinary users, but if anything goes wrong we get cryptic advice like "start looking at log files". Which log files? Where are they? What should we look for? Yes I have Amahi as my DHXCP/DNS sever, and have turned this off on my modem.
Now what?
Now what?
Re: VPN should work, but it doesn't
I was offering you advice and have no way of knowing your skill set. Please understand we are a very small team of volunteers who do our best with an overwhelming work load.
Now, the log files are located in /var/log directory. Recommend you look at syslog and messages.
The VPN info on amahi.org may not accurately dictate whether your VPN works or not. So if it says it is not, you might be able to still VPN. If not, then it could be a firewall issue or a router config problem.
In future, you might want to specify the level of assistance you need more clearly. I hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Re: VPN should work, but it doesn't
The problem here is a bad network setup.
192.168.0.x with 255.255.255.0
and
192.168.1.x with 255.255.255.0
are 2 completely separate networks. The only way to communicate from one to the other is through a router.
Simply changing the gateway will not solve all your problems. It may make some things work but it is a band aid. A wet one with flimsy adhesive. It wont stop the bleeding.
The easiest solution here is to change the LAN address on your router. Most consumer routers will provide easy instructions on how to do this.
Changing the gateway address on the Amahi server will simply change where it sends packets by default. It does not fix traffic coming it's way.

I am sorry you took my comment as directed at you, it was an expression of my general frustration with trying to get Amahi to work. I would be considered skilled in the Windows world, but in Linux I feel that every time something goes wrong I have to start searching for answers from scratch again, and the answers I find are usually contradictory, hard to understand and often ineffective.

I looked in /var/log and found messages, but nothing that looked interesting in it, but there was no syslog.
I have modem and router in one, and have checked every parameter I can think of and still it doesn't work. I cannot try from an external net today, but I am a little concerned that you say the Amahi service to check out the VPN from the Control Panel may not give correct answers!
I installed Adito VPN from the apps screen in Amahi 5 and that worked. When I had trouble configuring Amahi6 I uninstalled it, and now it is not available in the app store! So I can't try it to see if it works. I am sure you understand my frustration
I got Amahi because it said it was easy to us. I don't have time to learn Linux and Amahi at the level I apparently need to use it properly. If the only support is from dedicated but overworked volunteers maybe it would be an idea to release a fully paid version for those of us who need a lot of help? (I don't think Ninja is enough for idiots like me!)

Re: VPN should work, but it doesn't
Understand. Thanks for the clarification. Lets start with the VPN issue. There are some ISPs that block the port 1194. We had a user last night who could not get his working at all either. Turns out his ISP blocks that port, so he had to choose a different one, 443 to be specific.
You could try the same thing, following the wiki guidance here http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/VPN_troubleshooting. If that does not work, then we can do further troubleshooting. Unfortunately it is hard to figure our what the cause could be as there are so many variables when it comes to networking.
As for Adito is not avail at the moment as it has not been moved to live for Fedora 14. It is coming soon, but unsure if the time frame. It is my app, so I could give you access to help test. I would need you to PM me your amahi.org user name so I can add ya.
It is unfortunate that sometimes things become more complicated than they should be. We will do our best to try and assist. Please consider coming by the IRC for live help. There are typically folks there, to include myself at times, that can assist and possibly rectify your situation quickly.
I am sure we will get this sorted out. It just may take some time depending on what the root cause.
