Reading /var/mail/root

Postby rgmhtt » Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:51 pm

Do we have an app other than Webmin for reading /var/mail/root?

I have 139 messages in there, most of them problems with installing the email system with bigfoot65 and others cron jobs. I want a GUI tool, not the mail command line...

You can configure Evolution (which is installed by default I think) to receive mail from localhost.
Or you can yum install thunderbird and configure Thunderbird for receiving mail from localhost.
You can use X-forwarding (putty (check the X-forward in the X11 SSH configuration section) + Xming on Windows) to have the app pushed to your desktop or you can login locally with X.
echo '16i[q]sa[ln0=aln100%Pln100/snlbx]sbA0D2173656C7572206968616D41snlbxq' | dc

Another thing you can do is to create a file /root/.forward (as root). Inside this file, put a single line containing only your email address. Then all of the administrative mail the system generates will be forwarded to your email address in the future. (But not the email already received.)

that should already be fixed by an alias in /etc/aliases (1 real user should get the mail sent to root)

ofcourse you can also use mutt (or pine), which is cli driven.
echo '16i[q]sa[ln0=aln100%Pln100/snlbx]sbA0D2173656C7572206968616D41snlbxq' | dc

I did use mutt to clean up what was there.

I did figure out how within the webmail app bigfoot65 is developing and I am testing/supporting how to get localmail delivered 'properly'.

I DO like the .forward option over touching the aliases file.

mutt worked, but I don't consider it a GUI mailer, and other suggested GUI mailers are too big of hammers to what I am looking for!

Thanks everyone!

I personally like mutt since it allows you to delete patterns of messages quite easily (press D and then enter your filter) so you can get rid of for instance messages concerning logrotate or cron and focus on the important stuff.

Sometimes at work a machine isn't touched for 2 months and those messages add up quite quickly.
