Hi all, first post from a complete newbie to both amahi and linux.

I have been setting up a home server using amahi with ubuntu as the base software and while i have managed to muddle through to now using the wikis i have hit a problem that they haven't thrown up any answers to. I have been trying to install some of the apps through the one click install and when it gets to the stages where it says " Installing package dependencies ... " it just sits there and so far as i can see goes no further. I have tried this with VNC and open SSH as i am trying to setup remote access. This seems to have only come about since i installed plex (which i have now uninstalled and it has had no bearing on solving this problem) last night.

So far i have tried rebooting, uninstalled plex and then trying again, and leaving the install running overnight.

If you need me to post any logs etc then i am happy to do so i just ask that you let me know what i need to do to access them (as i said, newbie lol).

Hello,

First all let me make you aware that Ubuntu 12.04.x for Amahi while available, is in maintenance mode. What that means is you will not see any new features or app updates.

With that being said, there are a lot of apps that have been updated on Amahi 7 for Fedora 19. That is our latest stable release. Not sure if this has any bearing on your issue, but wanted to mention it up front. You should have see that on the install guidance at http://docs/amahi.org site.

Now for your problem, best place to start looking is /var/log at the log files for errors. Also I presume you have stable and reliable hardwired internet connection for your HDA. If not, that could cause you issues.

Feel free to post excerpts from the logs that you think might be useful.

thank you for the quick reply. I picked the ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS version version after reading that the latest versions have network problems and this one was recommended by a friend of mine.

in terms of the internet connection it is indeed hardwired and has always been a pretty stable connection in the time i have used my isp.

is there any particular logs that i should be looking into in the /var/log section? Are there any that are more likely than others to show me what i need for this particular problem?

Not sure where you saw the latest version has network problems. I would be interested to see these reports. As with everything, each case is different based on the user.

Amahi 7 on Fedora 19 has been pretty solid for the most part. Many of those who had issues were due to their hardware or local connectivity problems.

I have been running Amahi 7 since release with no problems whatsoever. Obviously it's you choice, but please understand support is extremely limited.

Nonetheless, I would look at the amahi-app-installer.log and possibly syslog or messages log files. Not sure which of the last two logs is Ubuntu, but should be something there that might provide some clue.

in terms of software versions for the time being i intend to stick with ubuntu since it has taken me about two weeks of getting to where i am now and having things pretty much sorted. I was previously able to install apps just fine and as such can't understand why all of a sudden this has stopped being the case unless installing plex has caused a clash somewhere. That being said i suspect maybe not since i have now uninstalled plex and am still having the same problem.

I have just accessed the log file and the vnc install is currently running and is currently hanging on the package dependencies as above. The syslog (from just before i started the install up to now) says this:

I think the last two lines relate to some files i have just transferred through the network into one of my shares (although if i am wrong on that then by all means correct me).

Not seeing anything that stands out as an issue. Have you installed the Ubuntu OS updates? Sometimes updates can fix issues that were created by other problems.

As far as Plex, we experienced a lot of dependency problems with it in F19, so we repackaged it to remove those issues. Don't know if that is related, but you might want to ensure Plex is completely removed, then reboot.

To check, do the following:

Can't remember if that is the correct package name, but it should be close.

i will give that a go tonight, it does seem likely that the plex app could have something to do with it (hindsight is a wonderful thing having now seen that some people have had trouble with plex generally) so i will try to do a full removal of it tonight and hopefully that will sort it.

Out of curiosity should it turn out that plex is the issue does anyone have any recommendations for a dlna server that will give some of the niceties that plex does in terms of the user interface at the none server end of the system? I intend to stream to my bluray player (sony bdp s790) and it would be nice to have something better looking and slicker than just a list of files which is what i had with serviio previously.

removing plex through the manual uninstall hasn't worked so i am a little unsure what the next stage should be really.

As much as i really don't want to have to undo the last couple of weeks work i have put into getting this far with it I can half see me having to start all over and go down the fedora route if amahi is this problematic on ubuntu.

if i do have to start again is it possible to remove the two storage drives currently in the machine and plug them back in when the new install is done? I really don't want to have to transfer everything off them and then back onto them once a new install is done ideally

Make a note of how all your shares are setup, which are pooled, which aren't.
Reinstall Amahi without the drives attached. Setup shares, exactly the same. Add drives.

This might take a while.

When you are using terminal, be very careful. VERY CAREFUL. I got a bit finger happy the other day and instead of typing

Guess what happened? Instead of erasing just .TXT files, it erased everything in that directory. Dang.
It's handy to use putty, because you can copy from forum, and paste directly into Putty to run commands. minimal chance of typos.

I've used this option to force Crashplan onto a single drive (don't use Crashplan anymore, but will be reinstalling).

that doesn't sound like fun tbf, i will have to have a think and make a decision over this. If i could just get VNC and plex/DLNA alternative to work then that would be a good start but i have tried multiple apps now and something is definitely screwed up somewhere because they all hang at the same stage of the install
