Problem with squeezeboxserver

Postby bellamatt » Sun Jan 15, 2012 2:09 pm

Hi all, I had installed squeeze successfully the other day, but have been playing around with the box to install other applications and seem to have messed something up. I now get an "unable to connect" message from http://squeeze, and trying a squeezeboxserver restart suggests that the service is not running:

Code: Select all

[matt@hda share]$ sudo service squeezeboxserver restart Stopping Squeezebox Server: [FAILED] Starting Squeezebox Server: Unable to read prefs from /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/prefs/server.prefs : Usage: YAML::XS::LibYAML::Load(yaml_sv) at /usr/share/squeezeboxserver/CPAN/YAML/XS.pm line 48. [12-01-16 07:53:41.1247] main::init (354) Starting Logitech Media Server (v7.7.1, r33735, Mon Nov 28 16:44:47 MST 2011) perl 5.012004 dirsFor: Didn't find a match request: [videos] dirsFor: Didn't find a match request: [pictures] [ OK ]
I checked that the service is running:

Code: Select all

[matt@hda squeezeboxserver]$ ps -ef | grep squeezeboxserver matt 7339 5082 0 08:08 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto squeezeboxserver
The server log from /var/log/squeezeboxserver says:

Code: Select all

[12-01-16 07:53:05.0241] main::init (354) Starting Logitech Media Server (v7.7.1, r33735, Mon Nov 28 16:44:47 MST 2011) per$ [12-01-16 07:53:05.2183] Slim::Utils::DbCache::_init_db (238) Warning: Unable to read/create /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cach$
I thought it may be a permissions issue. The /var/lib/squeezeboxserver directory and contents are owned by squeezeboxserver:squeezeboxserver. The /usr/share/squeezeboxserver directory and contents were owned by root:root, I tried changing to matt:users and squeezeboxserver:squeezeboxserver but no impact. I have also reinstalled the app twice with no affect so it could be something else...

Any ideas?

Why not uninstall and reinstall the app. If you messed something up, it may be hard to find and/or fix.

Hi Bigfoot, thanks for responding. I already did that a couple of times but still got the same error on the fresh install. Is it possible that the app leaves traces of itself on uninstall that are causing the problem?

If it helps for diagnosis. I did have troubles yesterday on a self install of sick beard, I couldn't get it running properly as a service and also shutting it down when I ran it directly. I didn't make any changes to squeeze when playing with that one though, only changed files relating to sick beard itself and got some extra python packages. I didn't use the app package for that one though so haven't posted on it.

Other than that I also installed pytivo yesterday, along with a couple of packaged apps (ampache, phpmyadmin, icalendar). They appear to be working ok

Yes it is possible there are traces of the app left. Do a search for *.rpmsave and remove those files.

You can do that command line as root user:

Code: Select all

find / -name *.rpmsave
Also, you could check to see if there are any files or directories with the name squeezebox still left.

thanks bigfoot, there was a whole directory left with an rpmsave file in it, deleted that, rebooted and all working perfectly now. also managed to get the other apps going fine so am quite happy at the moment!

Awesome. Unfortunately, that is feature of Fedora that saves those files. We have contemplated having them removed on uninstall of apps that use RPMs. Problem is if we do and you wanted to use previous settings, there are often lost.

We probably need to kick this around some more as it can be irritating when trying to troubleshoot broken apps.
