Running the plug edition and having trouble with apps. I can now get to them using the short name from within my LAN. However, when I go to http://appname, I am challenged for a username and password. I have tried every combination I can think of including the root password that let's me login via a console, but everytime I get:

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /session_login.cgi.

Reason: DNS lookup failure for: hda:<portnumber>session_login.cgi

Apache/2.2.13 (Fedora) Server at webmin.oakwoodroad.net Port 80

Any ideas?

I do not understand. Are you trying to access them outside the LAN? You indicated you can get to them via short name.

No I'm trying from within the LAN. It didn't surprise me when I was challenged getting into webmin, but it happens with extplorer as well. Happens on both Win7 and Linux LAN members.

Also trying to access hda shares (documents, music, etc.) leads to a password challenge.

Interesting. For the shares, that is normal. You need to provide the user name and password that appears in the dashboard. You can add guest access to shares which use anonymous access. See the wiki shares page for guidance on that.

As for the apps, not sure why you are being prompted. Make sure your workgroup settings for the clients and HDA match. That could contribute to the difficulty you are having.

Where would I set that within the HDA? Samba setting?

According to the hda "Settings" -> "Shares", the hda is a member of "WORKGROUP". The smbclient on my linux boxes also indicate "WORKGROUP", as does the Win7 box. The hda DNS domain is oakwoodroad.net.

I can putty to the hda with username root and a password, but I've tried all of the following to get me past the password challenge for hda://appname without success

\\workgroup\root
//WORKGROUP/root
\\WORKGROUP\root
as well as all manner of oakwoodroad and oakwoodroad.net instead of workgroup.

It is interesting that the Proxy Error page appears almost instantly (on any of my clients) when I submit the login information; there's no lag as occurs when I access http://hda, which suggests to me that the password challenge is being blocked locally before reaching the hda. But it's the same on all my clients, both Win and Lin.

First of all, I would recommend you change the workgroup name to match your domain, i.e. oakwoodroad, on all devices. Next you will need to release/renew IP on your clients.

Looking at your previous attempts, the user name is root. Is that your first admin user on the HDA? If so, recommend you use something different as root is a reserved user. That might be causing issues.

Still no luck on either WinClient or LinClient.

Focusing on only the WinClient for the moment, I changed the workgroup name to OAKWOODROAD and the set the name option so that it now appends OAKWOODROAD.NET to the computer name in the networking dialog.

I can login to hda using a non-root user account that has admin privileges, but I can't get to either shares or apps.

Trying to go to an app (hda\appname) gives me a username/password challenge, which I can't get past. I tried setting a required login for apps (http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Require_Login), but this added a second username/password challenge in front of the first. The new one appeared as a pop up and I was able to get past this with a valid user on the hda, but was returned to the second which appears on a webpage and is locked tight.

Trying to get to the shares is also no-go. When I go to Win7 Computer, hda doesn't appear in the Network list until I enter \\hda in the address bar, after which I can click on hda and see the default shares (books, music, etc) as well as a folder for valid user names. I can open the folder of the valid users, but I can't do anything with the default shares. I get an error that \\hda\music can't be found (even though it is plainly visible in the window.

After all that, I was on the LinClient and called up a samba client program. I noticed that the hda is still listed as belonging to WORKGROUP even though I changed hda > Setup > Shares > Settings > Worgroup Name to OAKWOODROAD. and the smb.conf file on the hda shows:
workgroup = OAKWOODROAD
server string = oakwoodroad.net

Sure is strange behavior. Have you done any customization to the HDA OS or Amahi since install?

What do you mean by "set the name option so that it now appends OAKWOODROAD.NET to the computer name" statement. Once you change the workgroup name on the HDA and client, a release/renew is required for the client.

Also, accessing apps via web browser is done as http://appname. You indicated hda\appname and that confuses me as to what you are trying to do. You should not be receiving a user name/password challenge for apps unless you have something set up. For shares, that is normal but not apps.

When accessing shares from Windows 7, have you tried \\hda in the run as box? Try not to use a browser or file manager to see if that makes a difference. I usually map my network shares as drives to make it easier for me. You might need to access shares as the wiki states for Win 7, \\hda.home.com\music. Substitute your domain name for home.com.

I may have asked this already, but I presume you are using the HDA for DHCP and DNS server, correct?

I have not messed with my plug in quite a while, but when I did use it I had no problems. I have Win 7 clients as well.

I am sure we will sort this out eventually, it just make take a while.
