Okay, I am working on a home server right now and I have to bring this up again because it seems strange that this package is not being developed for Amahi.

PS3 Media Server.

By FAR the BEST DLNA Server out there. If the Amahi DLNA played MKV it would be good as well, but how can you possibly ignore the most popular codec out there.

I know I can install it myself, BUT last time I tried I could never get it working, seems that the ability to do updates and get Java working is not easy for me.

I am willing to be a tester if anyone is looking at this extremely popular package.

hmm my dlna (that was repackaged by the Amahi team) streams .mkv fine... it does not, however, transcode the stream so it could be your device doesn't support .mkv.

The reason why none of us can get any of the current amahi DLNA programs to play MKV's on our PS3's is not because of the programs, there is nothing wrong with the current Amahi DLNA offerings as far as MKV files go. The problem is because the PS3 does not support MKV files.

If the file you are trying to play from the DLNA program is one that the ps3 supports (mpeg-4, mts, avi, etc) then no problem, it just streams.

If the file is not supported (mkv) then the only way to play it is to convert it (mkv2vob, etc) or use a DLNA program that will transcode the mkv file to a supported format (usually mpeg4) on the fly while it streams. This is very processor intensive. The most common programs are TVersity, Twonky, and PS3MediaServer.


So, once again, if someone could package PS3MediaServer it would be a great addition to this community. It will transcode to the ps3 as well as many other devices (it automatically detects the device) and is an excellent DLNA...

You are right, the best feature by far of PS3 Media Server is how it will switch to using TSMuxer to basically "stream" MKV to the PS3. I went through the who MKV2VOB process and VOB's are not nearly as versatile as MKV's. The biggest downfall of VOB is you are unable to FFW to a specific point in the movie. ?So lets say I watch half of a movie and want to watch the other half tomorrow. If I turn off the PS3 then you have to start the VOB all the way from the beginning. MKV I can skip right to the middle of the movie. I have played with this exact setup.

Package me up PS3 Media Server and I am all in on Amahi.

Has anyone tried to install this manually and got it working? I may be able to package it, but do not have any way to test.

I was hoping someone had already tried to use this so I have an idea of whether it will work with Amahi or not. It appears to be a rather simple app to install and configure.

IIRC it's nothing more than a java app. run the binary and it's working.

Sounds like an easy app to package then. I will add it to my to do list unless someone else wants to contribute.

I did not mention that it didn't work on my setup (even after installing all kinds of dependencies/requirements like mencoder ffmpeg etc.). Transcoding did _not_ work in any way, my TV refused to play all files I threw at it.

I quickly went back to minidlna after that.

Other than that I dislike the interface, it's a bit of a mess IMHO. not to mention that you can browse your entire system, it's not contained to only the movie/music/pictures directories. In some ways this is beneficial, in others it's not.

A friend of mine likes it tho' but he's running on Ubuntu.

I am a total noob with linux in general, have only had an ubuntu running shortly on my server before I decided to try out Amahi. Until now that seems to be a good way to go even though some things like PS3mediaserver is still to be integrated with it

I tried out PS3mediaserver on ubuntu because it was the only program I could find that do transcoding and it worked nicely. However, in the future I have to set up an HTPC in stead of using the PS3 to get a better interface, but as of now I am still using a CRT TV so that must wait.

After installing fedora12 and Amahi I tried out PS3mediaserver here as well and after some fiddling got it running ....But of course, integration with Amahi would be great...
