Installing my own apps?

Postby zandstra » Fri Feb 21, 2014 1:57 pm

Preface: completely new to Linux, Fedora, and Amahi, so please over-explain.

I've read that you can install apps yourself, but I can't find any instructions on it. Is there any special integration involved? For example, I'm planning to install Plex. I can install that on the box itself, it's a stand alone app. However, how does that integrate into Amahi? Does the Amahi Plex App add anything? Can I access the Plex app from the Amahi dashboard?

Yes you can install apps manually. Plex Media Server is in Amahi app store. If you want to install manually there should be plenty of tutorials on the internet.

The Amahi version has the same functionality as the manual install version. Our version has a link and server feature in the dashboard. If you are not Linux savvy it's best to use the Amahi version.

Ah, excellent. This is what I was looking for. Do you have any examples in video or screen shot?

Yes, I found that. That's what actually started all this. I'm a big fan of Plex and have used it before on Windows. What are the advantages of using the Amahi installer versus installing it directly on my server? There's a screenshot there, but it's minuscule and I can't make out any detail. It'd be a much more informed sell if you could say, "Pros: Access Plex from Amahi dashboard, anywhere you can access Amahi versus Plex by itself which has only access <insert access here>"

I mentioned them previously. There is a dashboard link, it appears in the Server tab for start, stop, restart, and status of the server. The install only requires one-click versus command line.

It's not that big of deal, just depends on how much work you want to put into installing. It's your choice as to the method you use.
