Splashtop Streamer Auto Login?

Postby thomasps » Wed May 22, 2013 5:09 pm

I installed the Splashtop streamer as an Amahi app. However the app does not auto start. I have to manually launch the app, type my password to unlock keyring, and manully click on login. This kinda defeat the purpose of being able to remotly connect to the machine.
Is there a way to start Splashtop Streamer at bootup and automatically log itself in?

Check this page in the wiki. It might help.
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Splashtop

I thought it was set to autostart, but I might be mistaken. I have not used the app.

Agreed with 1st post. What is the purpose of remote access app if you can't start it on headless system?

I installed it after teamviewer and VNC failed to work. Splashtop does work, but you have to login to server first before you can login remotely. Sounds ridicules isn't it?

At least put those conditions on description... So other's will not waste $5 and time on it.

We believe the app was supposed to automatically start.

We will report it to the app developers. In the mean time, we may be able to do something about this.

About VNC not working -- we definitely want to pay close attention to apps that do not work. That's just not acceptable. Can you provide the details here or to support at amahi.org on the VNC error? If you can please provide specific details ...

If the app did not install correctly, the details can be found out with this, typically (from the [wiki]App troubleshooting[/wiki] page):

Code: Select all

tail -300 /var/log/amahi-app-installer.log | apaste
If the app installed, but there is no connection, there may be details in /var/log/system.log.

Apps not working right is something that we want to eradicate.

Hi, we checked with the Splashtop developers and they said saving the settings and starting up automatically is kind of a problem, because it has security implications (someone could connect or eavesdrop without the user noticing). However, they have taken note of the request.

If you ask me, this is not a huge security thing, because this is after all a desktop machine and it most likely has automatic login to the console. Even if we script it to start automatically, I believe it will still require the settings.

For the time being, we will document this in the page for the app and hope that Splashtop recognizes these requests adds these features soon :(

I think there's still value in the app. It works very good once logged in. Having had VNC under Amahi Fedora (which I believe still works under Ubuntu) it was surprising that Splashtop requires manual login. So yes, definitely make a note in the app description.
