phpBB read-only folders

Postby sa3atsky » Mon Nov 15, 2010 8:24 am

Hi,
I've been trying to edit the phpBB folder "/var/hda/web-apps/phpbb", you know as in installing themes, hacks, changing imagesets.. yet the folder is read-only and I cannot edit anything through Fedora, or through Windows Samba share.

Can someone help me make it editable? sorry for the n00b question..

You have to be root user to make any changes.

su -

Then enter the password and navigate to the folders. You should be able to make any changes.

Different problem. The permissions of the folder/files has to remain as is or the app will not work.

If you want to make changes, recommend you do it via terminal.

Permissions are different on some files. Best to uninstall and reinstall.

Uninstall, reinstall again?

Okay, say next time I was to install a theme, change an image etc. Im going to have to "chmod 777" each file individually, edit it, save it, then refix its permissions? Theres gotta be a better way in managing phpbb's isnt there?

Probably....need to check their web site. We don't support the actual app modification/functionality.

If it was me, I would make a backup of the files I am gonna change. Then make the change and copy it back to the server. Match the ownership/permissions of the backup file.

There may be some functionality in the app that you are missing to do these tasks. That's why its best to read the app documentation.

http://www.phpbb.com/customise/

BTW...updated the app to the latest version.
