nevermind it was the line i added to the cron file that changed permissions to 660. In order for the newsgroups share to be accessible from other machines, permissions must be set to 777. for newbs like myself do the following:
sudo crontab -e
select nano by typing 2 and then hitting enter

add the following lines
20 * * * * chown -R adminusername:users /var/hda/files/newsgroups
20 * * * * chmod -R 777 /var/hda/files/newsgroups
change "adminusername" to the username you used when installing ubuntu

once these lines are entered, hit Ctrl+x, then y, then Enter.

That should do the trick, by fixing file ownership and permissions in the SabNZBd+ download directories every 20 minutes.

I'm not sure if running these commands every 20 minutes is a good idea or not, but I rationalized 20 minutes based on the fact that a 2GB bluray rip of an hour-long TV episode takes approximately 20 minutes to download on my system and I'd like to be able to watch some episodes the same night they air.

This might be good to add to the wiki. Would you mind adding it? I am sure someone else will have the same issue and be looking for guidance.
